D-Money
Kessel is a goalscorer, and in that respects has been absolute money for Toronto. He has 99 goals in the 3 seasons he's been there, the whole time having no legitimate 1st line center and being the only real target of the oppositions' shutdown crews. Cox is an idiot. There's practically no way they trade him. However, if they do, it won't be for Luongo. They'd have nothing to put in front of him! So they'd be going for full-on rebuild. They'd want young guys and/or top picks. A Kessel trade would be similar to the Carter and Richards trades to LA. It would be a team blessed with an over-abundance of young studs moves some of them to load up and compete now (Washington offering Forsberg and Neuvirth to land them some much needed secondary scoring before the season slips through their fingers). Or a team that has the young guys, but is sick of losing (Islanders offering Neiderreiter and Strome to get Kessel with Tavares). We simply don't have young players of that stature to offer, and the few solid ones we have we need to hang on to. So yeah...very unlikely that he gets traded, and even then, zero chance to Vancouver.
timberz21
Kessel with Kesler and Kassian would become the KKK line. Hockey fans already hate the Canucks, that would just make it worse lol
Blueberries
Kessel is UFA at end of next season. I've always thought he would leave as UFA. If I was Kessel there is no way I re-sign in TO.
WHL rocks
Man, TO gave up their future for this guy, why would they let him go?
WHL rocks
If Kessel doesn't re-sign and leaves TO, he would be 100x more hated than Vince Carter.
Onions
the issue is does Kessel want to stay? if he doesn't, then there's nothing Toronto can do come July 4th. He'll just walk. If this is the case, they need to trade him before the dead line. I think we could use a player like kessel but it might cost us too much. And we probably would only have him in a shortened season. It would have to be a serious cup run.
aqua59
http://www.thestar.c...phil-kessel-cox *This is more opinion/speculation, but it's an interesting thought. If not 'rumour enough', mods feel free to delete it
D-Money
Again, if Kessel has told Nonis he will not re-sign, and he gets traded, it will be for young studs, top prospects, and/or top picks. It certainly will not be for an aging goaltender, an overpaid #5 D-man, and a streaky perimeter player with a damaged back.
LegionOfDoom
Nonis will wait for burkes next gig and trade him there for 2 firsts
elvis15
Luongo + some prospects/picks for Kessel would seem to make a lot of sense for both teams.
Ilya Mikheyev
If Kessel decides he doesn't want to re-sign it will be interesting to see what Nonis does. I'm not a huge fan of his, but in his other big trade he completely killed it - the Luongo trade of course. It'll be a real showing of how good a GM he is, since his UFA signings were less than stellar when he was trying to fill roles - Isbister, Ritchie, Santala, etc.. D-Money
If Kessel were to hit the market, I could see Philly either offering Couturier, or a package of Voracek, Laughton, and a pick.
TmanVan
Toronto logic Reimer and Scrivens both looking shaky early in the season, and both giving up big leads which turns into a loss: "No worries, they will come around! Having two back up goalies does not hinder our playoff chances!" Their best player and most consistent goal scorer doesn't score in the first 5 games : TRADE HIM NOW! Pears
Damien Cox talks a lot without thinking about the consequences, but it is an interesting point - esp. the part about Nonis having no need to protect the deal. If Luongo is moved to a different team, maybe the Canucks could move some future parts for him, if that's the way Nonis is going to go. A package something like: 1st round pick Mason Raymond Prospect Asset acquired in a separate Luongo deal (another pick?) Burrows - Kesler - Kessel Higgins - Schroeder - Booth Malhotra - Lapierre - Hansen That would be a deadly bottom-9 going into the playoffs and great depth, esp. if Schroeder continues to get more comfortable at the NHL level. Probably also important for Nonis to try to move Kessel to the West conference.

Ilya Mikheyev
Load up for a Cup run maybe? I could see a deal like that happening if the Leafs are a ways out of a playoff spot at the deadline To Vancouver: Sean Bergenheim, Vincent Trochek, Alex Petrovic, 2013 1st To Florida: Roberto Luongo To Vancouver: Phil Kessel To Toronto: Mason Raymond, Vincent Trochek, Chris Higgins, Van 2013 1st Sedin - Sedin - Kessel Booth - Kesler - Kassian Bergenheim - Schroeder - Burrows Lapierre - Malhotra - Hansen Hamhuis - Bieksa Edler - Garrison Ballard - Tanev Schneider Lack ? Mike Vanderhoek
I don't know if Higgins would be a piece they'd seek, but an idea like that could be possible. Raymond, Petrovic, 1st & 2nd in seperate drafts.
brian42
I agree but I'd rather see Burrows Kesler Kessel maybe Booth & Luongo for Kessel. With a negotiating window or toronto Gives the Canucks a chance to talk with Kessel about resinging. Toronto takes on a lot of cap but brings in the Goalie they need and a replacement for Kessel both under contract. or Raymond & Luongo Then we could get rid of Ballard and Booth/Raymond for cap space next year. Trade Booth/Raymond & buyout Ballard. Ballard isn't all that bad but simply too expensive for his role. Sedin Sedin Kassian Burrows Kesler Kessel Raymond/Booth Schroeder Hansen Higgins Lapierre Volpatti/Weise/Malhotra
