@FriedgeHNIC: Canadiens announce two-year deal with PK Subban -- http://t.co/9IN47KWh

@TSNBobMcKenzie: So P.K. Subban re-ups with MTL, two years, $2M in Year 1 and $3.75M in Year 2 for $2.875M AAV.

@reporterchris
The #Habs and Subban could be back talking about a contract extension as soon as this summer. Another potential battle looms.

Good - glad he took a 2 year deal - players shouldn't be expecting 5-7 year deals - especially at 23 years of age...as long as he plays well he will continue to rack in the dough and will always have a contract. Sign long term, and he could coast...

Kirk: Maybe he's not out there, Bones. Maybe he's right here. [points to his heart]

Every GM/Owner should be buying Bergevin dinner for sticking to his guns. So refreshing to see one drawing the line on these young guys.

Montreal with possibly the best $ for $ signing this year. Great signing for the Canadiens.

So? In 2 years he'll be an RFA and he'll have 2 years to prove that he deserves a $6M contract or whatever he was asking

Because if he signs a 5 year deal at say 3.5, he is stuck with that for 5 years. In a year and a half from now he may be able to garner a 7 year at around 6 mil if he progresses properly, if he stays stagnant he is at the very least a 3.5 mil a year guy.

Elliotte Friedman@FriedgeHNIC

Couple of notes on Subban deal: Canadiens get what they want at two years and cap hit of $2.875. Where Subban gets help is with Year II...

because the $3.75M figure becomes the baseline for qualifying offer. Or, if he plays really well, arbitration.

Glad to see him back on the ice. Certainly less than he wanted, but I hope this is the start of a new trend where 3rd-year players don't automatically get $30M/6-year contracts.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

Two years for him to grow up and learn to play within himself.

He's got great untapped potential but he needs to harness it better if he wants the big payday.

Don't look know but Montreal suddenly has a very strong top 6 with Subban, a healthy Markov, the shot blocking machibe Gorges and the emergence of the young guys Emelin and Diaz(who shares the scoring lead for Montreal with Markov)

Over the last 2-3 years GM's have been bending over for these young RFA guys, yet the teams have all the power. Good on MB for using his leverage the way he's supposed to. PK thought they would cave, but really he had no options but to sign the deal the Habs offered.
