After seeing a couple posters discussing Kessel(snet article, etc...), I was mulling this over. I think there are many reasons it could fit. First:

Luongo, Booth, Ballard, Rodin, Sauve. To Van:Kessel, Komisarek, Biggs, Ashton/Colborne, Scrivens, condtl pick.

Why? For starters, we lose almost 14 mill in cap. Get back Phil's 5.4. Dump Komi's hit this summer/amnesty. Immediately, MG/Gilman don't have to worry about next yr's salary-compliance.

-We add size with 2 young, big fwds for the future, (mainly 3rd liners, it would appear).

-We could move on from the Ballard deal. I like the guy, but it hasn't gone well for him in Van(ask the Gods why); next yr his cap-hit is unmanageable, with the big-4 on D.

-Tor would get an opportunity to move on from the Kessel deal. If their 3 main acquisitions played well, they might even justify Burke's blunder. This gives incentive for them to add extra pieces.

Conditional-If Phil signs, we get a 2014 3rd rounder; if he doesn't, a 2014 1st rounder.

Is this value appropriate?

You will never see that many pieces (with that many significant names) involved in one trade.

Other than Luongo, there's no real value...

are you serious?

booth and ballard are like 8.5 in cap, and those prospects are underachieving and right now don't seem like they'll ever make it to the nhl.

Leafs laugh.

That's not happening. Any kind of trade involving Luongo and Kessel probably won't happen anyway - we have NO need for Kessel. The Canucks are stacked at wing, we need centers desperately.

Unless this ends up paving the way for a trade like Higgins/Burrows away for a bonified top-2 centerman, there's no way we get Kessel. We've got Kassian, Burrows, Higgins, Hansen, Raymond, Daniel Sedin and Booth who are all better than him anyway.

Higgins, Hansen, and Raymond better than Kessel?? LOL. I'd take Phil over any of those players 24/7 even though Higgins and Hansen are two of my favourite players.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

Thanks for replies; I'm iffy on the notion as well. Mainly enjoy considering the value of some of our assets. It's inevitable MG will need to turn at least 2 or 3 deals by next season.

Part of the premise behind this proposal(that I suspect MG will employ) is expanding the deal to include extra pieces, if Lu ends up being HOTLY pursued. He'll prob force the rival GM to take on extra cap or middling prospects. This would be easier with a franchise like TO or Wash, than say, Florida.

now that Burkes gone and with Kessels slow start I could see him getting moved but I think the trade would be much simpler than the OP is suggesting

Luongo for Kessel straight up isn't that far off in terms of value, we may have to throw in a young prospect (KCon maybe?) and TO may through in one of there backup goalies and a possible salary dump.

Kessel is a ligitimate 1b C. He's the guy if its not Phaneuf.

Nonis might do it for either.

Since Kesler is a shoot-first player, move him to wing.

D. SEDIN - H. SEDIN - KASSIAN
BOOTH - KESSEL - KESLER

The leafs have only 1 legit top 6 forward - Kessel, so why would they want to deal him? Yes, the Leafs could desperately us Luongo in net, but of they make a deal involving Kessel they'll desperately need help scoring. You fix one problem but creating another, no GM will do that.

Face it, Luongo will no get you a top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman. That's not a comment about Luongo's play but it's the reality of the situation. The demand for a skilled yet aging goalie with 10+ years left on his contract is minimal at best. The most important thing for Gillis is to get Luongo off the books and use the extra cap space in a more effective manner. He'll likely have to take some salary back in the Luongo deal, but he may have some extra space to work with.

Lu, Booth, 1st, Gaunce

Kessel, Ashton

Yeah, no thanks. We could move Luongo for picks and prospects rather than give up all the extra we do just to get Kessel (and Ashton, don't forget Ashton!) back.

Luongo and Booth is at least equal to Kessel (if not worth more)
The 1st and Gaunce is worth way more than Ashton (he was traded straight up for Keith Aulie, hardly a superstar)

Toronto would take that deal and run.

The only player on that list better than Phil Kessel is Daniel Sedin and even that is debatable.

Eddie Lack is out 6 months, don't think we're going to trade Luongo. Best to keep him in a shortened season.

As much as I hate the leafs....Kessel could be a good fit here

Another American who plays hard, and could complete the Am-Ex Line a lot better than Higgins could

Our go-to goal scorers are Daniel and Kesler, if they get shut down (which they do occasionally) it would be nice to have a another Sniper. We already have Kassian developing into a PWF, why not add some raw skill

We'd easily have one of the most dangerous top-4 forward groups in the league
Chicago-Hossa,Sharp,Kane,Toews
Detroit-Datsyuk,Zetterberg,Brunner,Flippula
Boston-Seguin,Lucic,Bergeron,Horton
Pittsburgh-Crosby,Neal,Malkin,Kunitz
Vancouver-D.Sedin,H.Sedin,Kessel,Kesler, with Booth,Burrows, and Kassian supporting 15-25g easily

Framework of The Deal:

To VAN-Kessel, Ashton/B-level prospect (this package helps us win now)
To TOR-Luongo,Raymond,2nd rd pick ***conditional 1st rd pick 2014 if Raymond doesn't re-sign

Sedin-Sedin-Kassian
Booth-Kesler-Kessel
Higgins-Burrows-Hansen
Volpatti-Lapierre-Weise

My 2014 Draft wishlist: 1st rd: Draisaitl, Virtanen, Scherbak. 2nd rd: Brendan Lemieux, Thatcher Demko (Goalie)

Nonis probably would want to find a better deal for Kessel, if he is trading the player.

Zoolander, On salary issues, we'd just be kicking the can further down the road. With Kessel, Booth & Ballard around, 64.3 mill becomes a fantasy. As we get closer to next yr, gm's will be less likely to do Gillis any favours. He'll be forced into buying out and/or getting late round picks for these guys.

It was this issue I tried to address with the initial proposal. Twins & Burr/ Kass, Kesler & Kessel-line 2(The KILLER-K's), Burr & Kass could switch at times, to keep opponents guessing.
