2014 Corvette: Stingray Returns, ‘Breaks From Tradition’

It is the iconic American sports car. Six decades of Corvette celebrated with an all-new, next-generation Stingray, introduced this week in Detroit and New York, sold everywhere this fall.
This is the first Corvette to be dubbed the Stingray since the 1980s.

“Stingray is one of the hallowed names in automotive history,” said Ed Welburn, General Motors’ vice president of global design. “We knew we couldn’t use the Stingray name unless the new car truly lived up to the legacy. The result is a new Corvette Stingray that breaks from tradition, while remaining instantly recognizable as a Corvette the world over.”

The new Stingray seems tighter in design, with a nose that seems more integrated to the frame than the last generation. And a rear-end that reminds one of a Ferrari.

The automaker hopes to distinguish this Corvette from previous models not only in name, but also in almost all of its components. The Stingray uses an aluminum frame, which is 57 percent stiffer and 99 pounds lighter than the steel frame used in the 2013 Corvette. It shares only two parts with the 2013.
The new Corvette boasts a carbon fiber hood and roof panels, lightweight compounds for the fenders and doors, and a carbon-nano composite for the underbody panels. The use of these composite materials reduces the weight of the car by 37 pounds. There are no EPA figures yet, but Chevrolet engineers are hoping for low 30′s on the highway… and confidently report that this will be the most efficient Corvette ever.

The new engine, a 6.2 Liter V-8, includes direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and a combustion system the company says will deliver more power while using less fuel.

On the inside, the Stingray includes two standard dual, high-resolution information screens and a smaller race-style steering wheel. The impression for the driver is all leather and carbon fiber, with a strip of aluminum on the doors. For the first time, Chevrolet will offer two styles of seats, the standard sport model and a Competition Sport option with side-bolstering to provide greater support on a track, begging the everyday driver to hit maximum g’s in the corners.

There are only two 2014 Stingray’s in existence today, both hand-made… and for display. So no driving allowed so far. We are promised a test drive this summer. For now we can only report that the new Vette doesn’t look 60.

To me, this car looks like a normal corvette with some extra fancy parts. In my opinion, a stingray should have a striking visual difference as that is what I remember of the original. The overall shape should be strikingly different from what we've seen before. Not sure why the author thought the back looked like a ferrari, reminds me more of a camaro.

The car lover in me says meh.... and as much as i love Corvette this is a design gone wrong. Way to many body lines, almost cartoonish in appearance. The interior is your basic GM plastic finish. The worst part about Chevy has always been it's terrible interiors. No questioning the performance and handling but cmon Chevy step it up in the design department.

They needed to take more risk on visual design before calling it a stingray. Seriously looks like something a kid would came up with after given a picture of the current corvette and a sharpie draw in extra pieces to make it look "cooler". It is visually too "busy".

Looks like a regular Corvette, with some added lines. Seems like they didn't know what to do and just gave up and added on a couple flashy pieces and called it a night.

A weight reduction of 37lbs. Is that even noticeable?

Or, I guess it's more than that. I didn't read the entire thing. But still. It's a car, it weighs a ton.

Uh, yeah it does. Lights, body style, rear curvature.. like I said, looks far too much like the Celica, rather than a 'vette. I'm not sure if you were thinking I implied they are identical or what, but obviously you took the comparison far too much in an absolutist sense.

Well...then it looks like a Taurus, Civic, Hyundai...etc....come to think of it, some of the swooping lines look like part of my motorcycle...so what's the point?

I didn't think Celica. If anything, I'd say Ferrari from the front end.

The point was obvious, that it looks too much like other cars for me to be impressed, even my wife agreed it looked quite similar to the Celica.. it's an opinion, chill.

Love it.

I'm not huge on American cars especially Muscles but the Corvette has a special place in my heart.

They made one of the best looking cars of 2014.

I like it a lot.

I'm not usually big on 'vettes, but this one looks nice. It looks like a corvette because it is one... It has evolved styling, if they completely switched it up people would bitch that it didn't look like a corvette and they were copying some other super car styling. I've loved almost every recent generation of 911, and I love how they've gradually evolved it rather than doing a complete overhaul every 4 years. In my opinion, that's what established car lines should do.

It's about time that they finally threw some led tails and drl's on this car. They're about 5 years behind on that.... Something I never understood.
