VAN - WIN

Recommended Posts

Winnipeg desperately needs a #1 goaltender, they're getting shelled night-in-night-out with Al Montoya and Pavelec. Surprise surprise this team is one of the deepest in the league at center, something the Canucks desperately need, even with Kesler back.

Schneider to WIN for Montoya and Antropov

Canucks have Luongo playing amazingly again, he's top-5 in GAA and Save % in the league and he's reclaimed his #1 spot while Winnipeg are in a bit of a rebuild with young defencemen, Scheifle and Burmistrov up front so Schneider would fit in perfectly with their future plans and match their primes.

Meanwhile, the Jets are stacked at center with Jokinen, Scheifle, Antropov and Little amongst others - essentially 4 centers who could play in the top-6.

Antropov is a huge 6'6" centerman who has been scoring well over 0.5 points per game over the last few seasons and his game and size would be great for the playoffs. The Canucks need size and skill like this down the middle, which is exactly what Antropov brings. Also, Montoya is 27, hasn't had plenty of success but would be a great backup for Luongo.

You win Cups with quality defence, a solid goaltender and depth at center. Boston won the Cup with 7 centermen in their lineup, LA with 6 and right now we have just 4 NHL centers. Antropov gives us 5:

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian

Burrows - Kesler - Booth

Raymond - Antropov - Hansen

Higgins - Malhotra - Lapierre

Fantastic depth at center and each line has a big body which is how the Kings won the Cup (Kopitar, Penner, King, Nolan). Now Antropov gives us that same size advantage right throughout the lineup.

A win-win trade. Of course you Luongo haters will suggest Lu instead, and of course we could take Brian Little instead but Schneider for Montoya and Antropov makes sense for everyone.

No thanks, not for Schneider.

We'd probably already been offered deals similar to that for Schneider, and Antropov is ok but makes $4M, is 32, and has already been dropped by the Leafs. He's also been accused of being defensively irresponsible, and has had stretches of disappearing offensively. 35 points last year and 41 the year before.

Montoya isn't near enough to make that palatable when we give up Schneider.

For comparison, people were previously talking about going after Kane or some similar significant piece if we traded Schneider to them. Not that it'd be even value, but certainly much closer than what you're proposing.

Gillis: Hello there, boy do I have an offer for you.

Ferrisbueller'sday off: Hey, Mike. What do you have planned?

MG: I thought I'd practically give away a talented young goaltender in Schneider.

FBDO: Oh?

MG: So I propose the following deal: Cory Schneider for Montoya and Antropov.

FBDO: It will be tough trading away the player that scored the first goal for the Jets, but I can't reject this offer.

MG: HAHAHA

FBDO: What's so funny? Is this Eklund again?

...

FBDO: Hello...

I've noticed a lot of overpayments and underpayments on these boards, and you'd be surprised what you will and won't get in trades. Maybe Winnipeg throw in a decent prospect or high pick, but you're not going to get a whole lot for either Schneider or Luongo. 1 top-6 forward, a backup goalie and a good prospect or pick is about right. Besides, Schneider isn't exactly a proven goaltender so there's the element of uncertainty and unpredictability that plays into a trade.

Oh and yes Winnipeg need a goaltender. Pavelec is not exactly a full time starter, he's had very average stats all his career. I don't see this team changing up their defence considering they have one of the best top-4's in the league with Enstrom, Byfuglien and co.
