With @darrenrovell talking about it on twitter today (and on ESPN2 tomorrow) I felt like it was a good time to start a discussion on the topic and more specifically how big of a problem it has become in Rogers Arena.

I work 5 days a week in a hockey store and have the advantage of being around licensed Canucks jerseys all the time. Because of this I feel qualified enough to speak about the issue.

I've been to 3 games so far this year and can say confidently that around 40-50% of the jerseys people wear in Rogers Arena are counterfeit. Once you see the difference between the two you can pick it up quite easily and you will start to realize just how many fakes there are out there.

It's a complicated subject with many sides to it. Tickets are expensive, jerseys are expensive, a lot of people don't know what is a fake and what isn't, even canucks.com doesn't do a great job training the eye to what is a fake and what isn't. I found all of these attached pictures in under a minute, all counterfeit. What are your thoughts on counterfeits? Have you ever bought one knowingly or unknowingly?

I think the solution could be to offer a grace period of 30 days where you can turn in your fake jersey for some sort of discount on a replacement and licensed jersey. After the 30 days anyone found wearing a counterfeit jersey inside of Rogers Arena will be asked to remove the jersey or be removed from the arena. After all it is illegal that these are being made, I'm not a legal expert by any means but you'd think they would be legally able to at least confiscate the item in question.

Sorry about the length of the post, looking forward to hearing your responses. Also feel free to post your jersey if you're unsure about it's authenticity.

Yeah, some people just can't afford to buy real jerseys. Would you rather see people with team colours or nothing at all?

I hate hate hate HATE people who wear counterfeit jerseys. Honestly, what's the point? You're trying to show your team's colors and that you're a Canucks fan? GO buy one of their t-shirts. Its probably a bit more than what you paid for your jersey but you're showing your team's colors by wearing a shirt or a hat. That is more credible than wearing a counterfeit jersey. I get that it's not within your budget but honestly, the best way to cheaply support your team is by either buying a hat or wearing a t-shirt. Simple as that.

If you can afford to buy tickets to a hockey game, why can't you pay $150+ to buy a real jersey from a reputable jersey store outlet? Is there really a difference? A jersey can you last you years. A ticket to one game only lasts for 2 and a half hours.

enough people show up at Rogers without canuck gear on. Buy a shirt or scarf or something, and enjoy the game, but don't bother with a fake jersey, a old t shirt is better than a fake jersey.

Ya it's what $150 for a jersey? You don't need one every year, I bought mine when the new jersey first came out and I haven't had to buy one since, it's an investment in a way

Do you feel like you are supporting your team by taking money directly out of their pockets? I know they make a lot of money but the amount of money they lose to counterfeit jerseys is enormous.

Yeah, some people just can't afford to buy real jerseys. Would you rather see people with team colours or nothing at all?

I get a new jersey each year, but that's just me.
If you're going to get a canucks jersey, please, please buy a real one.
It sickens me that people make money off someone else's brand.

Have you been inside the rink this year? Do you have any idea how to spot a fake? 40% is a safe estimate, it's likely higher.

It's only pushing 40% since the cup run and even then I'd say that's a bit of a stretch from what I've seen at the games this season. I do notice that 75% of fans visiting fans tend to be in fakes for whatever reason. The fakes that rustle my jimmies are the third jerseys that have the stick-in-rink logo as it was on the original 1970s jerseys instead of the new stylized version that's actually in use.

You're right. I would say the reason for this is that other teams jerseys aren't as easy to find. The cup run has a lot to do with the number of fakes I agree.

One of the problems is that there are so many different levels of licensed jerseys. Authentic Pro, Authentic Retail, Semi-Pro, NHLPA Pro, Semi-Pro Press. The easiest way to avoid buying a fake is to buy one from a local store.

Fake Canucks jerseys are one of the easiest to spot, whoever makes these jerseys have trouble with lettering and since VANCOUVER is on the front it's usually the first thing you'll notice. On the rink jersey's I have yet to see a fake where they used the new rink logo instead of the old as someone in this thread already mentioned.

The first thing I notice if I'm looking at the person directly in front of me is the Canucks orca logo itself.. That is the EASIEST to spot. If I'm side by side, the shoulder patch will ALWAYS get me as well. Some odd reason, their stick in the rink logo is super shiny... Or, if the person's back is facing behind me, I look at the numbers. Ours is thin, the fake jerseys have fatter numbering.

Just a quick tip on how to spot fake jerseys.. I remember one time, I saw one that legitly almost looked like a real one. The only thing that got my attention and automatically knew that it was fake was the number and the shoulder patch. Had a Kesler jersey and even though the 1 was somewhat close to being skinny, the 7 was really fat.

What a terrific and typically Canuck thing to do; charge the highest ticket price in the league, ban people from bringing in decent cameras and then run around confiscating "illegal" jerseys that deprive the team of even more revenue. Brilliant! That'll show the fans how much the team regrets the lockout etc. and shows them just how much the team appreciates their being at the game. Next up: ban opposition team jerseys. If the patron refuses to remove his or her, say, Bruins jersey they get kicked out of the game. Maybe throw them down a stairwell or something. If someone is foolish enough to make a homemade jersey they could sue them for copyright infringement, perhaps for the full retail price of an "official" jersey. Think of the potential revenue streams. Sheesh.
