Chris Kyle, an ex-Navy SEAL who wrote the best-selling book American Sniper about his service in Iraq, was shot and killed at a gun range in Texas, multiple outlets reported Saturday night. A second man was also killed.

According to local TV station KHOU, officials said that Kyle was

shot at point-blank range "while helping another soldier who was recovering from post traumatic stress syndrome" at a range near the town of Glen Rose.

The Dallas Morning News

reports that Lancaster, Texas police arrested a suspect, 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh, after a brief chase.

Kyle had become well-known for his exploits in Iraq, where he deployed four times,

set the record for sniper kills at 150, received numerous commendations, and, according to the Stephenville Empire Tribune, was given the nickname "The Devil of Ramadi" by insurgents.

Texas man arraigned on murder charges in shooting of "American Sniper"

(Reuters) - The man accused of gunning down former U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, a prominent military sniper, and a second man at aTexas shooting range has been arraigned on two counts of capital murder, the Texas Department of Public Safety said on Sunday.

Eddie Ray Routh, 25, was accused of killing Kyle, 38, and Chad Littlefield, 35, a neighbor of Kyle, on Saturday afternoon at the Rough Creek Lodge, about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth, the department said.

"They were shot at close range," said department spokesman Sergeant Lonny Haschel said.

Kyle, considered one of America's deadliest snipers after killing 160 people during his career as U.S. Navy SEAL sniper, wrote the book "American Sniper" about his military service from 1999 to 2009.

Routh, described in local media reports as a former Marine who suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), was arrested at his Lancaster, Texas home several hours after the shooting, having led police on a chase in his pickup truck.

"He was taken into custody after a brief pursuit," Haschel said.

According to a posting on a website run by members of the Special Operations Forces community, Kyle had been volunteering his time to help Marine Corps veterans suffering from PTSD and mentoring them.

"Part of this process involved taking these veterans to the range," said the posting on SOFREP.com.

WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth reported that the two men had taken Routh to the shooting range for the day to help him deal with his PTSD.

Routh was arraigned at the Lancaster municipal jail on Saturday on two counts of capital murder, a spokesman for the department of public safety said. The Erath County Sheriff's Office planned a news conference later on Sunday.

"It just comes as a shock and it's staggering to think that after all Chris has been through, that this is how he meets his end, because there are so many ways he could have been killed" in Iraq, Scott McEwen, who wrote the book with Kyle, told Reuters.

Kyle served four combat tours of duty in Iraq and elsewhere, and he won two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars for bravery, according to his book.

After leaving the Navy, Kyle founded Craft International, a firm that provided combat and weapons training to military, police, corporate and civilian clients.

Kyle is the co-author of another book coming out in May titled "American Gun - A History of the U.S. in Ten Firearms."

In the wake of the slayings of 20 children and six adults at a school in Newtown, Connecticut in December, Kyle was interviewed in January about rising calls for curbing U.S. gun violence. He told the website guns.com he favored arming teachers who have been screened and trained and spoke against restrictions on gun owners.

NRA's LaPierre Clashes with Fox News

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/02/nras-lapierre-clashes-chris-wallace-panetta-defends-hagel-knives/61735/

National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre and Fox New Sunday host Chris Wallace butted heads Sunday morning over LaPierre's assertion that every child in America deserves the same protection as the President's daughters. The NRA first made the argument in a now-infamous ad. LaPierre tried to defend the ad, but Wallace wasn't having any of it. "[The President's daughters] face a threat that most children do not face," Wallace said. "Tell that to the people in Newtown," LaPierre responded. "You really think that the president's children are the same kind of target as every other school child in America?" Wallace said. "That's ridiculous and you know it, sir." Wallace then posited that the ad made it a class argument, that it was wrong for "elites" to be privileged with armed security guards. "Yes," LaPierre said. "I'll tell you someone else who has security. You do," Wallace responded. "Sometimes..." LaPierre said, before beginning to stutter. Wallace pointed out that LaPierre had armed security at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, and even today at the Fox studio. "I don't deny anybody the right to security when they need it," LaPierre said. "What I am saying is, it's ridiculous Chris for all the elites and all the powerful and privileged, the titans of industry to send their kids to schools where there is armed security, to have access to semi-automatic technology."

SHOT Show 2013: Navy SEAL Chris Kyle talks Politics, Obama, Piers Morgan with Guns.com

Chris Kyle is an American badass. With 160 confirmed kills, he is the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. It goes without saying, but this former SEAL Team 3 operative and native Texan is a genuine hero.

For his bravery in battle, the four-tour Iraq combat veteran was awarded two Silver Stars, five Bronze Stars with Valor, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and one Navy and Marine Corps commendation.

Mr. Kyle’s also the author of the NY Times number one bestselling book “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History,” a TV Star, he appeared on NBC’s Stars Earn Stripes and is set to appear on Season 2 of the Outdoor Channel’s Elite Tactical Unit, and the president ofCraft International, a private security and protection firm that provides training to military, law enforcement and civilians.

Guns.com had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Kyle in the past; you can check out that Q&A here, but this time – at SHOT Show 2013 – we wanted to get his thoughts on the politics going on in Washington and the ongoing national debate on gun control.

As one might expect, Mr. Kyle’s answers to questions on President Obama’s proposal to reduce gun violence, the NRA’s suggestion of placing armed guards in schools, and the Piers Morgan/Alex Jones confrontation, were honest, candid, and totally sensible.

In addition to being a proud father and a devoted husband, I believe the thing Mr. Kyle is most proud of his the work he does for wounded veterans and the families of those who did not return from the war. As he’s so eloquently stated in the past, it is “our duty to serve those who’ve served us.”

Indeed. And along those lines, his share of the proceeds from his book are going to the families of his two SEAL brothers who died as a result of the war, Marc Lee and Ryan Job. Any remaining funds will go to other veteran charities.

If you haven’t purchased the book, you should get your copy now. You can buy the book here on Amazon.com. It’s a great read and the money goes toward an even greater cause.

Big thanks to Mr. Kyle for agreeing to do the interview. As we’re sure you can tell by the interview, he is one of the most down-to-earth, humble, cool dudes you’ll ever meet.

Your thread is not about this topic.

This is a completely different news item / topic which happened 4 days after you started your thread on American gun laws.

If I posted in the Luongo rumors thread that Ballard got traded would it be fair for me to go to "Ballard Traded" thread to tell the OP he's late for the party?

Quit being a clown, you don't have to start the thread for it to be interesting or valid.

You seemed to have missed the mod direction to dudeone on creating gun threads.

We don't need a new thread every time a story is found relating to guns...please start merging them by posting similar ones together in one thread. Thanks.

This is not a story relating to gun laws debate which hasbeen going on in America. This is a story about one soldier attempting to help other soldiers suffering from PTSD being shot dead at a gun range.

This is not a story about gun laws in America or mass killings in the US. It's a separate news story unattached to the gun laws debate.

It has to do with guns though. Whether or not it specifies gun control debate or not...this is a totally unnecessary gun-related thread when there is one single merged thread for threads about guns. It is still about guns...and it's a shooting murder...so it's a crime..and it belongs in the gun-violence/gun-control merged thread.
