Lubomir Visnovsky due to report to Islanders

The long, strange saga of Lubomir Visnovsky appears to be coming to a close, and the defenseman's Islanders tenure is about to begin.

Both the team and Neil Sheehy, Visnovsky's agent, said Sunday that Visnovsky is scheduled to arrive this week to join the Islanders. Sheehy said the plan is for his client to fly in from Bratislava on Wednesday and join the team.

Visnovsky still has a family member dealing with a health issue, but that might be resolved by the end of the week, so the 36-year-old defenseman is prepared to make the trip.

The Islanders acquired Visnovsky from the Ducks on draft day in June for a second-round pick, but there were problems almost immediately. Visnovsky filed a grievance against the Ducks to void the deal, saying that the no-trade clause he signed with the Kings in 2007 should be enforced.

An arbitrator ruled against Visnovsky in September, but the lockout began soon after and he began playing for HC Slovan, the KHL team based in his hometown in Slovakia. Once the lockout ended last month, Visnovsky declared his intention to stay and not report to the Isles, but the KHL forbids players with NHL contracts from staying.

Visnovsky might not make his Islanders debut until Saturday, given that if he arrives Wednesday, he'll have no practice time before the Islanders and Rangers face off at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Per the New York Post, the 36-year-old defenseman could be in the lineup as soon as Thursday against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Visnovsky is expected to arrive on Long Island Wednesday. If he doesn’t play Thursday, New York’s next game is Saturday at home to the Sabres.

Led by former first overall pick John Tavares, the Isles are off to a respectable 4-3-1 start and currently occupy seventh spot in the Eastern Conference. If Visnovsky can play like his expiring five-year, $28 million contract suggests he can, the playoffs may not be such a long shot.
