The Philadelphia Flyers and Kimmo Timonen have agreed on a one-year contract extension that will be worth in the neighbourhood of $6 million.

Timonen was slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

"We are pleased to announce that we have signed Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract extension," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "Kimmo's presence on the ice for us and in our locker room is invaluable. We look forward to him continuing his all-around play for us."

The Finnish blue liner is in the final year of a six-year, $38 million contract, which carries a $6.33 million cap hit.

In 10 games with the Flyers this season, Timonen has one goal and four assists for five points and a plus-2 rating.

A former 10th-round pick of the Kings in 1993, Timonen made his NHL debut with the Predators in 1998 and has compiled 107 goals and 405 assists in 980 games for the Preds and Flyers over 14 seasons.

Timonen has had a great start to this year. And oh boy, do the Flyers ever need him.

Still, he turns 38 in March. I'd be scared of signing him so early into this season. Especially with the cap going down - there will be a lot of bargain free agents available, for the few teams with cap room left to sign them.

He is so essential to their d-core. But even if he is Finnish and all, a great leader and so on. 6M sounds rather steep. But as pointed out. They REALLY need him. If Pronger was there, he would probably have gotten a little less.

Timonen isn't flashy and doesn't have a giant slapshot, but he does have the ability to get his shot through lanes(and accurately), make some amazing breakouts, amazing PP plays (He keeps the puck in the zone SO consistently) and VERY sound defensive play. He can still skate quite quickly to boot.

Now take that entire skillset and add his experience as a vet.

If Suter gets effectively $9m/year (with the exception of the last 3 years), Timonen definitely gets $6m

A better comparison may be Jovo at $6.5m
