Islanders traded a conditional 2nd rounder for either 2014 or 2015.

This move doesn't make any sense. Why would they give such a high pick for Thomas? Did he say he would play this year? I would think that if anything, Boston would have to give the NYI a 2nd pick just to get out from the cap hit.

Wtf? Why would the Islanders do that?

He's not playing this year, and I doubt he plays for the Islanders next year.

So what do they do with Dipietro now?

maybe the islanders wanted thomas's cap hit to reach the floor and then they can suspend him. or its a conditional based on him signing an extension.

That's exactly right. He is suspended so they don't actually have to pay him. This guarantees they are above the cap floor.

Anyone know what the penalty is if you are below the cap floor?

Arthur Staple@StapeNewsday
Move is cap-related -- #Isles needed to be over the floor by tomorrow, needed insurance against not being cap compliant the entire season.

haha looks like i was right that is just sad they are giving up draft picks so they can avoid spending money.

An actual smart move by Garth Snow?

They don't have to pay him, the cap hit doesn't affect them, and they get a 2nd rounder out of it.

Nice one.

Edit - My mistake. They gave up a 2nd rounder.

wow a 2nd round pick just to reach the floor get rid of all the people running the islanders and get some people that actually give a crap about the hockey this is a complete joke unless they somehow get thomas to play next year which i highly doubt

also they should just get rid of the floor already

And Boston gets out from under his 5 million dollar cap hit.

Meaning they can make their team even more dominant. :sadno:

That team has to be one of the luckiest teams in the league.

Trading high draft picks just to reach the cap floor.

I feel sorry for the remaining dozen Islanders fans out there.

If true this move makes sense because ..

1. The pick is conditional. most likely the condition being Thomas plays for the Islander and or signs an extension.

2. If Thomas refuses to report to the Isles this year they could/will suspend him and not let Thomas turn UFA next year. This way he will have to play for the Isles for 1 season if he ever wants to return to the NHL. They used similar tactic with Nabokov.

3. Cap floor.

Isles get Vezina and Conn Smythe goalie for max 2nd rounder. What else could they ask for.

Since Thomas won't resign anyway it doesn't cost the Isles anything.

I can imagine the rest of the East is pissed though as Boston now has cap space to use at the deadline....as if their roster wasn't good enough already.

Quite the collection

Dipiertro and his gimpy knee
Nabakov and his attitude
Tim "cheeseburgler" Thomas and his gut

Who is next? Marty Turco

Lol and NYI gave up a 2nd? You mean they couldnt give up a 7th? WTF

They dump cap and pick up a 2nd round pick for a player who was never going to suit up for them again. Slam dunk for the B's.

The Isles... 2nd round pick just to reach the floor? Seems to me this move made sense for the B's even if it was a 7th rounder.

I think that is the condition with the pick. If he doesn't report then its probably a late rounder.

Charles Wang and Garth Snow for Aquilini and Gillis LOL

OH CDC..

Things like this shouldnt happen, same thing with having guys like Souray or Redden burried in the minors, that means that 2 minor leaguers are replacing 2 NHL vets, that clearly still have it.

I know thats last season, but now we have teams throwing away picks just to reach the cap floor... Definitely a flaw in the system..

Oh how the mighty have fallen. The trade might as well have been the old "future considerations" because I'm betting the conditions of the conditional would include Timmy signing and playing for the Islanders next year which won't happen.
