@ToddCordell: The Florida Panthers have announced they've traded defenseman Keaton Ellerby to the LA Kings in exchange for a 5th round pick.

Dude didn't cost that much...

Looking into it, doesn't seem that way. Panthers had 8 d-men up on 1 ways because of injuries and now that everyone is healthy someone had to go. Ellerby was the odd man out

Pretty cheap for a young, 6'4'' 6/7th Dman who is only making 700K.

He is certainly an upgrade on Barker IMHO as well as being really young with some upside. If Gillis and Tallon are chatting regularly, I wonder why we didn't get in on this.

Would make sense if we didn't have Tanev but Ellerby is too good to sit but not good enough to make any of our dmen sit

It better be. Could this be the day that Luongo gets his wish, and ends up in Florida?

Amazed that Ellerby went for such a low price. Reminds me a little bit of when Philadelphia stole Coburn from Atlanta many years ago. Can't believe Tallon would give up on a guy his age this quickly. A 5th round pick?!? Unreal.

I don't get why they choose to let go of Ellerby of all their 1-way d-men. And didn't get much in return IMO... Oh well...

Wouldn't it have been easier for LA to just ship Lokitonov to Florida for Ellerby?

Ellerby is LH, so is not going to bump out the guys we have on that side.... but he could bump Alberts and Barker if we could have found homes for them.

I guess we just don't need any more LH D and it was bad timing.

Doubt Luongo even wants to go to FLA in the current state. Not looking like playoff team, sadly.

Ellerby for only a 5th is very Tallon-like. Guy is a good GM but he is so irrational sometimes with dumb moves. See: waiving Grabner.

Nobody makes a trade with Florida but us! NOBODY!!

Seriously though, Ellerby is not that good. people on here are overrating him cause of his size. He'd be an 8th spot defenseman on this team and probably wouldn't see any ice time.

Annoying move tbh - Ellerby isn't a "cap dump" - he's an ELC making 700k. Can't see Tallon's angle here at all - and hate to see giveaways going to the SC Champs. bleck.

Agree with this. It takes a certain player to fit into a 7/8 role and be happy and if you're too good for the 7/8 role but in that spot anyway, you won't be happy.

He was taken 10th overall in 2007. People were saying the same things about Coburn when Philly acquired him back in the day. High pick, not performing to expectations, etc. Not saying that he'll turn out as good as Coburn, but I could easily foresee a Bryan Allen-esque career for Ellerby.

As for the Canucks, they wouldn't have any interest in him anyway. He's a WHL product.

With 1m sunk in Santo in the minors, this is essentially a dump. Not all dumps are huge

contrary to popular belief, mike gillis isn't all that interested in acquiring scraps from the leagues bottom-feeders.

the same reason he doesn't put in a waiver claim on every player whose name you recognize, or give up assets for failed prospects that people here are convinced have upside just because pierre mcguire raved about them during tsn's draft day coverage.

Hmmm... you might want to reconsider acting like such an arrogant dog-doodie. The facts actually suggest the opposite. He has made a career by picking up guys from the bottom of the heap where other teams haven't had interest.

Some scraps that Gillis picked up who are currently on our roster:

Tanev
Lapierre
Higgins
Volpatti
Weise

basically a 3 way trade.

NJ- loktionov
LAK- ellerby
FLA- 5th

florida kinda gets the shaft here. both those guys will probably help their teams more than that 5th rounder

10th overall in one of the worst drafts in recent memory. Means nothing. Alot can change in 5 years.

Cam Barker was taken 3rd overall. How's that workin out for him?

I see him being another Ryan Parent type player. Probably be out of the NHL in a few years.
