Canuckerbird
http://edition.cnn.c....html?hpt=hp_t1 The man probably got blackmailed. Very unsuccessful papacy. He's resigning because of health reasons...yeah, as if the last Pope was jumping all over the place in his latter years... This is pretty historic stuff, the last Pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415 during a "papal civil war". No Pope, regardless of how frail he is has ever abdicated the Throne of St. Peter. My guess is that someone found out about some scandal that Ratzinger was involved in and blackmailed him into quitting. That scandal, whatever it is, must be of a gargantuan proportion. The type that could ruin not only Ratzinger, but the Church itself. Rome (CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28, his spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told CNN Monday. The 85-year-old pope is resigning "because of advanced age," Benedict told the cardinals of the Catholic Church on Monday. "Strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me," the pope told the cardinals, according to the Vatican. The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415. He did so to end a civil war within the church in which more than one man claimed to be pope. Benedict, the 265th pope, is the sixth German to serve as pope and the first since the 11th century. He became pope in 2005. He has led church after the third-longest papacy in church history and during a time in which the church is declining in his native Europe but expanding in Africa and Latin America. Benedict's time as pope has been marked with a series of scandals and controversies, including hundreds of new allegations of sexual abuse by priests. Canuckerbird
This has the makings of a great, scandalous story. Probably going to be movie or novel worthy someday. The Church would be better off choosing someone young, liberal, and more amenable to changing the Church's hardline stances on issues like gay marriage, contraception, etc.
Mr. Ramsay
Damn Pope John Paul II past away that many years ago? Sure didn't seem like it But I never really liked Pope Benedict.. He hasn't done much to show me that I would like him. Fool, you should be a priest until the day you die. Don't re-sign just because you're too old to run the show. Canuckerbird
This is not going to happen anytime soon . The hardliners control the curia , they will now choose a younger pope who will continue the take the church back to the "good old days ".

Mr. Ramsay
I sincerely doubt that old age and health are the true reasons for his "resignation". Ratzinger got pushed out, or was blackmailed. No doubt about it.

G.K. Chesterton
Someone who actually knows something about the Pope offering his thoughts: http://www.johnstackhouse.com/2013/02/11/some-early-thoughts-on-the-popes-resignation/ Hopefully whoever replaces Benedict will stand strong against the frenetic moral relativism of the age.
