Both Luongo and Schneider are Right-Handed Shot; Explains their poor puck handling skills?

If you watched the Hardest Shot Competition during the Super Skills, then you might have noticed that both Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider shoots right handed. However, both of them catches with their left, which makes it extra hard when they want to handle the puck when they are in their goalie equipment. Some noteable goalies that shoots with right and catches left are Curtis Joseph and Dwayne Roloson. Every time they come out to handle the puck, they have to do an awkward switch or rotation of the stick to their natural handedness. So, does this explain why both our goalies are weak at puck handling, because both are right handed shots with a left glove?

Schneider.

Makes sense; Joseph was a pretty brutal puckhandler himself. Luongo's has definitely improved over the last couple of seasons.

I've known about Louie for a long time and was aware that it was a big part of his problem. I believe that he's been working on it with Rollie for the past few years. It makes sense that Schneids is a righty too.

Conversely, some of the best puck handlers amongst goaltenders have all been lefties. Brodeur, Turco, Hextall.....

Orland Kurtenbach and Dennis Kearns had just been torched 8-1 by the Habs, but they still took time to come out to meet us, some fellow BC boys who were playing hockey in Montreal. THAT"S what being a Canuck is!

Possibly. I shoot right, and anytime I played goalie in pick-up games or anything I always wore a glove on my right hand because it felt better to me. In hindsight, it helped me move the puck/ball a lot easier too.

Also, I'm impressed with Schneids ability to shoot in all that clunky gear...I bet he can shoot harder than some guys on the team

Noticed this as well...and you're right. I play net as well but catch and shoot left. I can't imagine trying to handle the puck as a righty...that would be awkward. Kudos to them, especially, Lu, who has obvious improved this skill in the last couple of years.

I remember the Johns talking about how Luongo shoots right a couple years ago when he was fumbling with the puck in the corner.

Wow. I thought I was the only one who did this when I was a golie as a kid. Glad to see that professionals do it too. Now I don't have to feel bad for letting in so many goals all those years ago.

It was a fun touch to the event, though. One of the better skills competitions I've seen.

Yeah that would definitely explain why they have troubles handling the puck, if they both shot left there would probably be no issues with them playing the puck at all.

I disagree, I believe it's a mental think fast issue. It's all confidence and they just don't have any behind the net.

I'm the same way, shoot right but catch left. With a glove and blocker on I am not that much better if I swing my stick around and fire it right. I used to do that when I was a kid but stopped doing it because no NHL goalies did it.

These guys have been getting up at 5 in the morning and putting on goalie pads since they were 6 yrs old, there's no reason they wouldn't have an ok left shot by now. It's gotta be a mental thing IMO

Not uncommon for goilies to be a right hand shot and catch left. You will notice though that both Lu and Cory dont swap over to a right handed Shooting position or a stupid Dwayne Roloson backhand shovel when they play the puck. Both have had to learn to shoot left handed, I went through the same thing growing up.

Completely untrue!!!!!! I was way better at playing the puck then most in my junior days... Although as a player i shoot right handed. The way I passed the puck was I turned my glove over and held my stick with my pinky towards the ice. Its just about finding what works. But as I said earlier that is no excuse!!

There's really 2 different ways to play around with handedness.

First, most players who are right, use their blocker on their right. The reason being that you hold your stick with your dominant hand. Same reason 90% of people in the NHL shoot opposite of their dominant hand, so when they're hustling with 1 hand on their stick, or playing defence, you have your dominant hand controlling the stick.

If you played goalie and were right handed, and also caught right handed. You would have an easier time puck handling, but your blocker side would be weaker.

Really it comes down to what's natural when you started.

I wonder how many people would be catching right if there was more opportunity to, from what I understand most goalies when they start just use the team gear and it's almost always for left catching goalies.

a lot of goalies dont want the puck handling catching gloves either. it can make a huge difference for creating a stable base at the top of the stick to give you leverage. My guess is lu/schneids dont have the cheater pockets on their gloves for stickhandling as it can cause some funny rebounds and dropped pucks.

I shoot right and catch right too. But in baseball I catch left and throw right. Weird.

It is most likely the reason .

I play goalie myself, I catch left with my blocker hand on my right. As a player I shoot left so with my bottom hand on the stick being my left hand I was always comfortable shooting the puck as a goalie.

I can't imagine a right handed shot trying to play as left . I know some of my buddies usually just stick their [Left] glove hand on the knob and their blocker hand on the lower part forcing you to shoot backhand.
