well the other topic is locked... but I shouldn't have said anything about MI. apologies for what it is worth, which isn't much at this point...

It should have been locked right away (Rule 6 - Personal Lives etc.).

Your apology is worth quite a bit actually.

You realized a mistake was made and owned up to it; well done.

Moving on, everyone hopes the best for Manny and I hope he can keep on improving and contributing.

I really hope we don't resign him, there are far better options for the 4th line.... I'm sure JS will be a lot better at face offs by next year and we should also have Kesler the whole season, so it won't be that much of an issue compared to this year.

Would rather have a guy who is intimidating and wears down opponents.

Great guy but like MG has said himself this is a business and not about feelings..(something to that effect). I wouldn't re-sign him, if we do likely 1 year and under a million...even then id rather try someone else out.

He might retire. Wife has new baby, and he's not as productive as he used to be. Either that or he'll take a major pay cut to stay in Vancouver OR take less of a pay cut to play somewhere else. Can't imagine him wanting to move though with a new kid.

I personally think he'll sign a 1 year 750,000 contract in Vancouver, and we should keep him I think. He's a great face-off guy even after that nasty eye injury.

Jordan does not provide that with his stature and playing style.
You are sure. JS will be better....BUT,he is the worst on the team in f/o% .
Manny is second in the entire NHL with over 70% success.
Jordan is amongst the very worst in the NHL at this stage of his early career.

My prediction is that he'll pot a goal or an assist in back to back games with some nice passes and the CDC will begin chirping about how we should resign him next year or trade him for (enter top 6 forward name here) now that his values 'gone up'.

Remember five games ago when Kassian was god, or Tanev's stellar play ( he scored one goal)? Currently it is J. Schroeder in the spot light and he's our next franchise center, according to the CDC, based on 6 games.

I'm not knocking any of these guys, they're all good players. Rather I'm trying to illustrate how quick the fans are to jump on a guy when he's not producing and then go polar opposite and proclaim him the best player in the NHL after he has a couple of good games.

I agree that Manny hasn't been himself since the injury but if you look at his career stats he was never much of a goal scorer. His career high is 14. His face off % is still good and he's still putting forth 110% effort. There is just something intangible missing from the equation. He is 32 now, I could see the Canucks offering him a contract extension for another season if he agrees to drop his salary down to 800K. I think that would be a fair price for a 4th line center that is in and out of the line up frequently.

He's definitely on the decline and not as effective as his first few seasons here and most importantly before his eye injury. I say he leaves but can see him signing a 1-yr contract.

We need to stop having a love-in with every decent human on this team. He's been pretty much useless out there outside of faceoofs, time to get rid of him. No need to keep him around in hopes he regains a form many of you are over-rating. He was never anything more than a 'good' third line centre. We have better options now.

Could we sign him to a 2 way contract? Where he could earn top dollar in the NHL 1mill+ but could be moved safely back and forth between the minors where he could work with Gaunce and Jensen. I would be happy to pay him a little more if he would agree to moving back and forth at short notice.

No way he signs a 2 way contract. He will want to play in the NHL if he can still, guaranteed. And some team will offer him a contract, he is still a useful player on alot of teams that dont have the depth that Vancouver does. I know what your saying it would be nice for him to mentor down on the farm but it just wont happen. In a perfect world he takes a significant paycut and resigns with us for 1 -2 years on a reasonable 1 way contract.

Yeah because we are rich in centers that are defensive powerhouses.

Holy crap.

More to Manny than that.

Managements decision on Manny will have a lot to do with Lapierre. He is also a free agent at the end of the season. If he decides he wants to go somewhere he's going to either get more money or a bigger role (and who can blame him) our best option may be to re-sign Manny. If he'd resign for $1-1.25 he may be the best option for the 4th line. We don't have any other centers coming up from the minors to fill that role. Gaunce isn't a viable option for the 4th line.

Does anyone know who would be available as an RFA to fill the hole next year?

I remember when the Canucks signed Malhotra to take over Kesler's defensive responsibilities and allow him to play a more offensive game which resulted in an amazing season for #17

Those were good times...until that fateful eye injury (with playoffs around the corner) which forced Kesler back into a half offensive half checking role that taxed his body to the limit...as is evident even still with his injuries.

If only things could have turned out differently with Manny. A brutal eye injury his first year with the Canucks..and things have just never been the same, now here we are having this conversation.

I think if Gillis wants him back after this season it will be for a contract that is much more economical than his current one.

Barring some outstanding performance in the rest of the season I think this will be his last season in Vancouver, but anyone who thinks his NHL career is over is insane. He has 1-2 useful years on a contending team, maybe 4-5 years left on a bottom-feeder team, and Manny has made it clear he wants to continue his career as a player.

Expect a team like Carolina to look into his services.

That's the smartest thread i've seen so far, manny i think isn't yet fully recovered but there's room for improvement and i'm sure he'll get there but it may or may not be with us. That! thankfully is up to MG but i'm thinking about cap space might be too much of an issue to keep him.

I like the ideas of those who are suggesting he come on board with the team's management. That would be sweet. Manny is such a smart player and so well respected as a person.

He still looks like he has a few more years in him as a player but it would have to be at a similar salary to now. Nothing close to or over $1 million IMO. He's valuable but doesn't bring any offense at all to the table. I don't know if it's worth it though, to keep him around just for faceoff duty

Whether he has a 1-way or 2-way contract has zero impact on whether he has to clear waivers when being sent to the minors. All a 2-way contract determines is a different rate of pay at the AHL level.

Waiver eligibility is determined by career games played. I can't recall the threshold, but Manny is way past it.

Do people not realize how important Manny's faceoff abilities are to our system? He's one of the best in the game.

If we've got a defensive zone draw with a 1 goal lead and 30 seconds left in the game, who do you want out there taking draws? Of course it's Manny.

A faceoff win in those situations can be the difference between a win and a loss. And in the playoffs, it's even that much more important. Never underestimate the value of a faceoff specialist.

Faceoff stats are important, sure. But you know what's more important? being able to play defense and offense... if we all want to feel bad for him, then just give him a job as a special coach for faceoffs or something then. He's not very good at this point and never been the same since the injury.

If he's winning faceoffs then he is playing well defensively.

You ever stop and think that maybe these "personal reasons" are what's throwing him off his game? You don't just dump one of your veteran leaders because they're struggling. You work with them and get them back on their game.

What if we just cut Raymond after last season? That would have been a big mistake, considering he's been one of our best forwards so far.

I have no idea what these personal problems are, but he was bad last year too. But can the Canucks get someone who is actually better? I'm not sure about that, the Canucks 4th line has been terrible for so long. However, this becomes less of an issue once Kesler and Booth come back. Maybe my expectations for him are just too high, I'm not even sure anymore, but he's a fringe NHLer at this point.

I don't think as many people connect these dots as there should be. Our success all started with Manny that year.

His success allowed Kesler to be relieved of a ton of defensive duties and lining up to shut down opposing top lines... Kesler focused more on offense... his scoring took pressure off the Sedins because teams couldn't just focus on shutting them down.

It was having Malhotra that let the other guys flourish. I like Lapierre but he can't serve the same purpose, neither can Schroeder. Unless we get a 3rd line centre we will have to have Kesler take most of the defensive and PK workload and hope that a speed 3rd line of Raymond-Schroeder-Hansen can pot in some offence.

Not the best configuration for a long playoff run though.

Hopefully him and his family are ok.

People love to rip on the guy, but we really could have used him tonight during the final minutes for some of those draws in our own end. I'd love to see him come back on a cheaper contract as a 4th line option.
