Malholtra and Kesler were huge for our faceoffs that year. We were number 1 or 2 in the league basically because of those two guys. Sucks not having either right now.

Not a big loss. All he is anymore is leadership and a voice in the room.

And he still provides that even though he is injured

This is terribly sad news. He was a big reason for the run in 2011.

Actually no, no he wasn't...

Are you kidding? Do you even watch him play? Sure he's not an offensive player but he's awesome on the penalty kill* and the best faceoff taker in the league no doubt. We don't only lose leadership, we lose those two aspects too.

He's almost completely blind in that eye, one of my teachers went to the game against the flames and he said that behind the play Manny cut in to turn on his blind side and almost wrecked a guy, didn't even see him

He would have to pass minimum vision tests to be cleared for NHL play, so he's absolutely not 'almost completely blind' in that one eye. We do know he has reduced vision there from the injury, but we don't know if that has improved, worsened or stayed the same. We don't know either if the eye is the reason why he's on IR, but he does have to have some issue directly related to him versus an issue with his wife or one of his kids to qualify for IR as far as I know.

Actually, maybe it is related to his eye:

TSNBobMcKenzie
The bottom line on Manny Malhotra: there are deep concerns his eye injury/vision are not at level to allow him to safely play the game.
Malhotra is reportedly not prepared to formally retire at this time but he's been shut down for balance of the season.
I would expect Malhotra to function as an unofficial assistant coach for balance of season, working with players in VAN and AHL CHI.

And the earlier comments from today by Manny's agent:

News1130Sports
Breaking - Manny Maholtra's agent Paul Krepelka just told CKWX that the Canucks will be announcing soon what's going on with Manny.
Krepelka coudn't comment but says everything will be cleared up soon.
Krepelka did say Manny "will be in Vancouver a long time - it's his new home". Take from that what you will.

I hope it's no more serious than preventing him from playing at a high enough level to stay in the lineup, versus complications or further issues with his eye that would lead to blindness or other similarl issues that would have a more serious effect on his quality of life outside of hockey.

EDIT: on a side note, I'm glad Ari is jumping on the bandwagon of being helpful and letting people know when a thread already exists, much like Vintage did the other day. He seemed to be annoyed when Vintage had done so for another poster.

From both of the threads created immediately after this one he so nicely linked back to his own thread:

I think he meant the entire 2010/11 season. Manny was playing great up until the injury.

Man this sucks. I feel horrible for Malhotra. I was really hoping Malhotra would return to his 2010-11 form. He finished 5th in Selke voting that year. He played like a boss. It really sucks that this has to happen to a guy like Manny. He's up there for one of the classiest guys in the league. I hope he gets a job within the Canucks organization.

Good luck Manny.

Well that sucks :( I'll echo the sentiment that if this is it for him as a skater, I hope he stays in the organization in some management/coaching capacity.

I guess a positive of this is that it gives us a bit of cap relief :/ Small consolation for losing him though.

Best of luck Manny!

Not sure what is up but perhaps the cap is the reason he is being put on ir. if he retired now I'm not sure the Canucks would get any cap relief but they do get cap relief for him being on IR. Also from his perspective he still gets paid this way. Therefore, being placed on IR works better for both sides.

Six and a half months of incredible third line shutdown play with Hansen and Torres allowing Kesler to find his offensive stride and along with the first line start in the offensive zone.

All of this aside, why are people splitting hairs on this? Shut up and have a little class. The guy not only lost the most part of an eye in dedication to this team, but risked his other one by coming back. Some fans eh? Grow up .

Sadly, like many others, I too think this will mark the end of his career. Hopefully he can get into an organizational role behind the bench or behind the scenes with the 'Nucks. Good luck Manny! Get well!

Don't get how bad of an injury is it that he just put on long term IR? He just played a few games ago and was at the Skills comp looking normal and happy...think this more of a management decision? The personal reason may be they are not good terms?

He is not an over 35 contract so if he retired they would get even better cap relief than IR room.

I suspect he still wants to see if things can improve and he can continue his career.

But the wearing the visor is good advice. :)
