It's not surprising, in fact you could feel something like this coming with him leaving due to "personal" reasons and being a healthy scratch. He's clearly an unselfish player, just look at it in his perspective. He's half the player he once was, and with Schroeder playing the way he did, it wouldn't feel right to bump Schroeder or another young guy off the team just so it just made sense.

Am I the only one who thinks this is merely an amazingly classy move by a classy player? I think he's stepping side because he is the odd man out now that Kes is back. He knows that he doesn't really have it anymore to play and this way he doesn't have to be pushed to retire at only the 1/4 way mark of the season, so he instead says it's his eye, he possibly goes on LTIR where his salary comes off the cap, and he saves face. Or maybe he just stays in IR in case of injuries later on to someone else? He's doing this as a team player tho and it just shows once again how classy he, and the organization is. They could have traded him for a pick, but instead they go this route with him and all is happy. Great move! :towel:

Man this severely takes a huge cut to our team on the ice and the moral in the locker room. This guy was clutch in the faceoff dot but an instrumental player in the dressing room. Well Liked, well respected in the NHL and an ambassador in this league. The NHL and the Canucks will miss his duties on the ice.

All the best Manny to whatever it is. THis team isn't the same without ya.

I thought he was wearing a visor. The puck came up under it.

But the wearing the visor is good advice. :)

EDIT: My bad, he was visorless.

Yeah here is the video:

Don't get how bad of an injury is it that he just put on long term IR? He just played a few games ago and was at the Skills comp looking normal and happy...think this more of a management decision? The personal reason may be they are not good terms?

Seriously? Come on man.

Ugh. I was so happy to see Kesler coming back and then I hear this....

We might not see Manny play another game...

Such a great guy. Hope he stays somewhere within the organization.

very strange timing since Manny wasn't injured this year but recently had a family addition <?>. Perhaps he was just not up to par with NHL skill anymore and GM/Manny agreed what was best for all to pay him and give the team cap space. I did recall a couple times Manny got burned on the PK and 5-5 play and wondered what his eye was up to.... likely at the end of the year he'll retire and take a front office job.

Perhaps they'll look for a 3rd or 4th line PK/faceoff specialist (Steckel?McClement? anyone else??)....that or schroeder is permanent on the 3rd 'speed line' and Lapierre drops to the 4th....

Overall, I still think the canucks could use any of the following cup run pieces:

1) Rugged stay at home d-man (like a Willie Mitchell)

2) PK/Faceoff specialist to let Kesler focus on offensive play (which worked in 2011 when Manny took the defensive and shadowing role)

3) 2nd line winger to complement Kes/Booth (maybe a passer first winger, O'Reilly or Iginla?)

Not a big loss. All he is anymore is leadership and a voice in the room.

And he still provides that even though he is injured

Jerk much?I think it is a big loss. Of course he is leadership and a voice in the room, but he also had a great role on the ice. Of course the eye wasn't the same after the injury. This is a huge loss to the Canucks.

He is not an over 35 contract so if he retired they would get even better cap relief than IR room.

I suspect he still wants to see if things can improve and he can continue his career.

. You may be right but I'm not sure if teams get cap relief, regardless of age, if a player retires mid season . I don't know all the details of the new cba. I do know that they do get cap relief from him being placed on long term IR though.

People have been ripping on Manny this year and he is clearly effected by eye injury but we are really going to miss his him even in his diminished form (face-off ability).

Having a guy like him changes your strategy at points, we really got beat up against the wild last game

Get well Manny, you are a class act.

It sucks because he does seem like a nice fellow, but I don't see how anyone can say this is a huge blow. While his faceoff percentage was great, he still wasn't put out in last minute situations in the last game (Lapierre was...although he had an icing too...but I'm assuming he would have stayed on either way). Other than faceoff's he was pretty much useless to this team (zero hitting, zero offensive prowess and he seemed to have lost a step). We have the players to replace him that's for sure.

I hope he doesn't retire. He will get himself back this off season and there are teams that will want him and could use him and his faceoffs for the playoffs.

Awful news and glad to hear he'll be in the organization still but moving forward this helps solve our lineup issue when Kesler and Booth are back.

this lets Schroeder stay on the team when Kesler and Booth return.

D.Sedin - H.Sedin - Burrows
Booth - Kesler - Kassian*
Raymond - Schroeder - Hansen*
Weise - Lapierre - Higgins*
Volpatti, Ebbett

"*" : Players can be switched on lines.

Those are 4 solid lines that can easily play 10+ minutes.

It was a thought. Like someone else said on here, it might even be he knows he is the odd man out and its a management decision for him and the team. Or like he missed last game for personal reasons he might need to step away from hockey and focus on personal stuff.

Very sad news. He wasn't the same player after his injury.

I expect him to retire after the season and join the coaching staff. He is probably not retiring now for cap and salary reasons.

It's actually good of the Canucks to put him on IR. They save the cap space, he gets paid in full, and he can still be around to help coach/mentor the team. It's a tough pill to swallow for Manny but it's probably the best scenario for all parties moving forward.

Weird how it came about. Hope nothing happened to his wife or child or anything. If it's his eye injury that sucks, but strange how he played fine with it last season. Unless it just kept slowly getting worse or something.. but he looked mostly fine this year with faceoffs and everything. Guess we'll be waiting to see if it's eye or whatever personal thing he had come up.

Possibly a detached retina from some recent contact? Or something that jarred something within that repaired eye? Sucks, at least he can help the boys with face-off skills.

He probably won't be playing in the NHL again. I could see him working his way up through the Canucks organization becoming a General Manager in the NHL in 5 years or so.

He would have to pass minimum vision tests to be cleared for NHL play, so he's absolutely not 'almost completely blind' in that one eye. We do know he has reduced vision there from the injury, but we don't know if that has improved, worsened or stayed the same. We don't know either if the eye is the reason why he's on IR, but he does have to have some issue directly related to him versus an issue with his wife or one of his kids to qualify for IR as far as I know.

Actually, maybe it is related to his eye:

The NHL minimum vision requirement is 20/400. A person whose better eye is 20/200 or worse is considered legally blind. I have no knowledge of what level Manny's bad eye is, but I would guess that his bad eye meets the requirements for legal blindness.
Very sad day in a way, though with his limited vision he was never going to be the force he was before the injury. My speculation is that he has just had a new baby and may have had a close call in practice or during a game with his good eye. I think this led him to decide that even a lucrative playing contract was not worth losing his vision completely.

Looks like it is his eye and he wasn't happy with it. Sucks for him, eye injuries suck. Ohlund really struggled after his too.

Not sure what is up but perhaps the cap is the reason he is being put on ir. if he retired now I'm not sure the Canucks would get any cap relief but they do get cap relief for him being on IR. Also from his perspective he still gets paid this way. Therefore, being placed on IR works better for both sides.

It's actually good of the Canucks to put him on IR. They save the cap space, he gets paid in full, and he can still be around to help coach/mentor the team. It's a tough pill to swallow for Manny but it's probably the best scenario for all parties moving forward.

The IR has nothing to do with cap relief.

You're thinking of LTI (which most call LTIR) as that allows teams to exceed the cap ceiling in the event of an injured player being out long term. We don't need LTI as both Kesler and Booth are already counting against our cap and we are still under even with their replacements in the lineup.

All IR does is free up one of the 23-man roster spots, which is helpful in this case if Kesler is ready to return ass we'd be at 24 roster players with he and Manny, so we'd have to drop someone. We'll still have one too many when Booth's back from injury, but that helps for now.
