Can't believe there wasn't a thread for this.

So for those who have a special someone, what are your plans tonight. Do you buy yearly gifts (hockey tickets, earrings, etc), go out for dinner, watch a specific movie? Or, like some couples, do you and your significant other treat the day like every other calender day?

Myself. Picking up sushi after work for dinner. Already went home for lunch and cleaned up the house properly, so the wife won't have to worry about coming home to a mess. I rarely get her flowers for Valentine's Day, which she doesn't mind. I buy her flowers quite a few times throughout the year, so it doesn't bother her that I don't get her any on V-Day.

We'll end up watching 1 of 5 gushy romance movies that she loves. And then, obviously, there's the last thing.

So, what does everyone have planned?

'oh, it's valentines day. better do x, y, z, because that's what i'm supposed to do on valentines day'

Doesn't mean it's insincere. The unfortunate thing is that people rarely make an effort throughout the year to do nice things for each other. Valentine's Day just gives those people the kick in the butt to actually do something nice. Me, I do far nicer things outside of Valentine's Day for my wife than on the actual day itself.

i was trying to watch a 'romantic movie' with a 'friend' last night and we couldn't keep a straight face during the choosing process. it was so stupid. how can people NOT be self conscious over the idiotic motions and expectations of Valentines Day?

i think it is inherently insincere because of the association we all have with valentines day. it's like a dumb cultural thing, we all know it exists, and we all know what's expected of us, and therefore it's insincere, even if we mean well.

(edit: i'm not as negative and cynical as this sounds, nor do i mean to be as jerky as it sounds. whatever floats your boat, gents!)

Nora Ephron made a career out of rom com type movies, and most of them are as clever as they are charming. something for everyone, even with the saccharine endings

if you've gotta pick one, choose one of hers!

This pretty much. We don't feel compelled to do something on a certain day merely because it's highly commercialised. There's 365(.25) days of the year to be romantic and show appreciation for your SO, and there's Christmas for buying presents, and Easter, Halloween, and Christmas for buying crap-tons of candy.

This one seems quite redundant and pointless to us.

I have some problems with this day...

because many girls invite me to go out for a dinner/movie/date just because I donīt care if I spend 500 dollars (or more) in one night just to have some good moments and not necessarly end in sex and because Iīm romantic and I donīt care what people around think about it...

so if I go just for a dinner...

the restaurant and the food must be good, I donīt eat too much but the food must be tasty, if the girl eats well means I did the right choice. and the wine must be good too. I hate bad wines...

if I go just to see a movie...

the movie must be good, romantic or not. must be relevant to talk about it later...

if I go to have a normal date...

the girl doesnīt pay anything unless she really really insists (including dinner and movie). and I like to talk about many things, from her plans and her Ideas to what is happening in Formula-1 this year and I really pay attention about what she says. I like walk and look the sky and buy 30 flowers (or more) for the girl, normally I donīt understand too much about the flowers but I try choose a nice number of diferent flowers. at least I did good choices recently...

and I like to dance, 2 hours nonstop. from heavy metal to disco music. :)

actually 25 girls called me today. But Iīm working dammit! Iīm on a hotel waiting my boss telling where we will go at 2AM...

when youīre romantic girls only remember you on this day...

I'd say its the best day to be single. You save a ton of money and don't have to do any stuff you don't like if you're whipped by a boring girl.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but what I understood is that single girls call him up to have him take them out, pay for all their crap, show them a good time, then they leave him high and dry after such a wonderful evening.

Because he's "romantic".

Oh man, this might be the weirdest/funniest post I've ever read on CDC

Now, sorry if this is slightly insulting. Not my intention. I'm assuming English is your second language, you'd be better served to spend $500 on some English classes, 'cause this post hardly makes sense.

I'm very proud of you for being able to spend $500 dollars on a date but in doing that you sir have a high chance of getting played. Most girls will stick around if you keep spending money on but in doing so it makes it very difficult to insure she's really into you.

The best dates don't include huge amounts of money spent.... You're doing it wrong! Also, movies are horrible dates, they're more for established relationships.

Lastly, if you're dancing for around two hours and the playlist includes Metal & disco, I'd imagine the flow of the place to be pretty out of wack, that's just me though.

Women like thoughtful dates, not necessarily expensive ones. Flowers are nice, yet make sure not to buy thirty just 'cause you can. Anything around or under a dozen is sufficient.

I spent the day with my fav woman...Mary Jane!, Best part is, ! had her twin sister at the same time and she never got mad!

Also, After I had them, I jumped on the skytrain to get home and couldn't stop laughing at the girls that were carrying around a crap load of balloons and flowers and were awkwardly having a difficult time trying to find space, don't worry, you got noticed!

I always thought it would be smart to get married the day after or a few days after Valentine's day. Because then on your anniversary every year all the flowers and chocolate would be half price and all the restaurants empty.
