Ilya Mikheyev
The facts:6'6215 poundsCareer high - 19 pointsLast year on a 1.1 cap hit contractLast year he had 8 goalsFaceoff stats the past three years (not incl. this year): 58%, 62.3%, 59.2%170 hits/76 games last year Who: David Steckel. So, it was thought that Steckel would be the perfect fit under RC in Toronto, but he seems to have fallen out of favour, having played only 5 games - although he is playing today, he has had less ice time today than any other Leaf besides Colton Orr. Back in his Washington days he played regularly on the PK (1st amongst forwards on his team in 2009-2010 in SHTOI/G) and took important faceoffs. He's a big body, who isn't afraid to play physical, is great on the faceoffs and can play LW if needed. Other reasons why Gillis might be interested is that he's a former 1st round pick and he wore the 'A' during his college days, indicating good character. He played on the same college team as Ryan Kesler. Also, if there's any chance GMMG is moving RL to WSH, then there will be a connection already here (a la Higgins & Lapierre type thing). With Manny out, a guy like this will be useful IMO. Something like this could be reasonable.. To Toronto: 4th round pick 2013 + Andrew Ebbett + ___________ (?) To Vancouver: David Steckel + a 7th rounder 2014 Then the Canucks could ice a bottom-4 of: Volpatti - Steckel - Lapierre Weise And Nonis gets a decent depth player to replace Steckel's current position as well as a better piece for the future. Smashian Kassian
Would rather grab Jim Slater. Brings everything Steckel brings, is more consistent, way faster and more gritty IMO, he's just smaller.
smithers joe
i agree, getting a good face off man to replace manny's skill would be great.. bozak.......
Ossi Vaananen
I like Steckel, though your deal is confusing. I see us dealing a late pick for him 4th or worse, that and dumping a contract that isn't working (Sauve, Rai, etc.).
silver_surfer
I've been saying this for a while, he'd be a great fit as a 4th line centre. Him or Boyle from NYR.

Smashian Kassian
Just not a fan of Steckel, he is big and can win faceoffs but he doesn't use his size effectively and is slow. Would look at someone like Derek Mackenzie before Steckel myself.
Ilya Mikheyev
I was quoting canuktravella's post from the thread "Available centres". He called a thread-full of posters retards for suggesting the Canucks could use another centre. And then in this thread he said we should pick up Steckel, and in Van-NJD/Van-CLB thread he supported acquiring Johansen.
Smashian Kassian
How does he not use his size effectively? He throws hits as much as anybody. He was the most used forward on the PK by both Boudreau and Wilson.. He's been mis-cast in Toronto this year is all. He plays pretty much the exact role as Malhotra, except he's a bit bigger and Manny was a bit faster.
Ilya Mikheyev
He doesn't though. He just doesn't always use his size effective, he's not always physical enough for his size. There is a reason he is struggling. If he was as physical as you think he wouldn't be a healthy scratch, especially with Carlyle as the coach who loves to be big, mean and phsyical. I just think there are better options honestly. He is good on faceoffs & has alot of size but not overly impressive anywhere else.
Smashian Kassian
Hmm.. from what I've seen he is physical enough (+ he had more hits than any Canuck last year not named Maxim) and considering he can be a role player - PKer & faceoff taker, AND the fact that is value is probably at a low, I think he'd be a good acquisition. Obviously there's a little risk considering the way Carlyle has been treating him, but you don't want to overpay for a role player either.
