Am I the only one getting tired of seeing us get pushed around game after game. Please dont give me the fact that we have team toughness. We have a few willing middleweights, period. Luongo gets run last night and there is zero retribution. I assure you the whole team would play two inches and 20lbs bigger if you had at least a deterant that you could dress when need be. The 4th line does not score , gets very few minutes so why not have someone who will make the other team think twice about taking liberties with your skilled players. Enough is enough.

There's a thread literally right below this one basically talking about the same thing... I'd post my opinion on the subject to make me seem less mini mody but I already did it there as well as the Jared Boll proposal thread

Admire Aaron Volpatti for stepping out of his weight class to fight Ryan Reaves because his team was flat in the second period. And it worked to a certain extent. I don't see Dale Weise doing this...

Though my thinking is if Volpatti is going to play 4-6 minutes a night, might as well dress a heavyweight.

Eactly my point, take a look at Chicago with Bollig as an example or even the leafs who are starting to play better with some serious toughness in there lineup.

Agree .. Volpatti will not last the season at this rate .. he cannot stand up to these big guys pounding on him .. once he is done for the year. Dale Weise will carry the Canucks colours into the fistic fray .. :picard:

I have been saying this all along....it is not like Volpatti can play 10,12 mins a game, why not a legit toughness instead? fksking stupid...

so who is this legit toughness and how do you prupose we bring him in exactly?? that's part of the problem as well. do you want to get caught overpaying and potentially helping out another team in the long run by giving up early draft picks and prospects to aquire some toughness that may or may not work out. and its not like a lot of the good tough guys ever really get traded.

I highly disagree that the Canucks have been pushed around. If anything we are tougher this year than we've been for a few years. Just because a game gets a little chippy does NOT mean we are getting pushed around. It just means it's a chippy game with rough play from both sides. In fact I have seen time this year where it was the Canucks that pushed the other team around, for example against Anaheim. Don't forget, we still have Jim Vandermeer who is willing to take on anyone.

Minnesotas Kassian just was on waivers, there are several guys who could be had for next to nothing, it will not cost you any more than a 5th round pick

Vandermeer is game but would get killed by a legit heavyweight. Did you not see luongo get run last night with zero retaliation!!! How about when Dustin Brown ran Sedin in the playoffs and then waited for the nearest canuck to jump him which ofcourse no one did.

He's won about 3 fights his entire NHL career (that i can think of off hand)and 2 of those were against Hordichuk. Why would anyone be afraid of a guy who plays less then 5 minutes a game. To exact all this retribution for our star players the guys gotta be able to be out there for more then that to get his chance. I'd gladly try for a Parros, Neil, or Shawn Thornton because they can actually play the game as well as throw down. But they'll cost you to aquire. Matt Kassian and players of his ilk are a waste of a roster space.

-The Luongo thing was one play, it happens every game to every team
-The Brown hit was clean, and we had the puck when it happened so it would be foolish to jump him right away when we had an opportunity to score. And you need to watch that sequence again, because after we lost the puck Bieksa chases down Brown and jumps him, initiating a scrum.
-We honestly don't need to worry about beating up the big heavyweights in staged fights. Heavyweight enforcers make up such a small percentage of the league, and they spend most of the time sitting on the bench anyway. In the playoffs, they will probably end up watching from the press box. Enforcers are useless these days, it's all about guys that are tough and can actually play. With guys like Kassian, Vandermeer, and Volpatti in our lineup, who have fought guys like Boogard, Parros, Lucic, Thornton etc., we finally have guys who can drop the gloves with pretty much any player in the league. The Canucks are 3rd in the league in fighting majors so far, so we are clearly willing to fight.

Kassian is too young for us to rely on him to fight guys like Backes. At 22 he isn't nearly close to reaching his full potential strength. I'd really like to get Chris Neil from Ottawa. If you didn't think other fans could hate the Canucks anymore, wait until he joined the team.
  • 0

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Chris Neil would be perfect, as would David Clarkson the pending UFA on Jersey!

Chris Neil would cost an arm and a leg to get out of Ott, same goes for Clarkson. Even as a UFA Clarksons demands are going to be above what hes actually worth he scored nearly 30 goals last year. And will most likely re-sign in NJ. The kind of players you guys are talking about almost never change teams once they show they succeed at there role.

Believe me when I say I'm not a big Weise fan, I'd love to have a Neil or Clarkson like you've said. But those kind of guys aren't easy to acquire, generally you've got to develope them yourself. And I wouldn't say Weise is a waste of a roster spot simply because of these few reasons

A) he can actually skate with NHL calibre guys
B ) he could play PK if necessary
C) he plays the body reasonably well (yet inconsistently) and will fight whether to protect a team mate or to bring some energy.
D) he's capable of putting up 10-15 point in a season (82 games) while being defensively responsible

agreed, would love Chris Neil on this team, him and Clarkson would be the 2 of the 3 pieces that would win Vancouver the Cup. Need a big nasty D that can play as well.

You guys realize the thread says get a true heavyweight and both the players you suggested are nearly exactly the same size as Volpatti right?

Clarkson being 1 inch taller and 15 pounds lighter
Neil being 1 inch taller and the exact same weight

Waste of space Weise is actually bigger then both of them

i would have grabbed Orr last year when toronto let him go to the farm, signed Parros in the offseason and then tried to trade for Neil, and i would keep Volpatti, then we would start to be approaching the level of sandpaper required to win the cup this year.

Uhh....Backes isn't a fighter and Kassian would EASILY beat him in a fight.

He isn't too young to be a goon either, look what Clifford and Lucic did when they first came into the league at 18/19.

Problem is, we need him playing a much bigger role.

By doing that we'd be out 3 current roster players so I'd imagine that would be who you'd trade for Neil. Who would those 3 be? They'd all be wingers to and the Sens really need center and defensive depth more then anything
