What is MG waiting for?

While Chicago does not have the 'psychic passing of the twins' in their repertoire, they are crisper passers in general and skate atleast 5mph faster than the rest of us (with the notable exception of Hansen, Burrows & Kesler). Their players like Toews, Kane and Hossa are epic at puck posession, primarily due to either size (Hossa) or blazing speed ( Kane) or a bit of both (Toews).

Chicago has always had a better top 5 than us, dating back to the last 3-4 years. The reason they won the cup the year they did is because they also had amazing bottom six depth ( some of the guys who were their bottom six are now top-2 liners today, thats how deep Chicago was) and the reason we KO-ed them 2 seasons ago was again, due to our significantly superior bottom six depth.

To put it plainly, Canucks currently, are not the best at either depth (which we were 2 seasons ago) or top 5 guys on the ice and with MG in charge, we are not going to completely expose our bottom six by trying to trade for another 'star' while letting go players like Higgins, Lapierre, Weise because of cap issues.

I would absolutely love for Gillis to acquire Mike Green. He's the elite puck moving D this team needs to complete its D core (and make no mistake, he's still elite. He's not putting up many points but neither are Ovechkin and Backstrom. There are other issues in Washington). One of the defensemen would have to come out, though. Probably Ballard, via a trade.

Edler - Green

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Garrison - Tanev

^ Sweeeet. Problem is, that's one damn expensive D core.

No way in hell they trade Evander Kane more like it. It would take something like Kesler plus a first and Tanev (that probably wouldn't get it done either, considering how they want to build up not lose a key piece for an older guy) to get Kane, not Luongo.

Um I think he is waiting for Kesler and Booth to get back up to speed.

By the time the trade deadline comes Gillis will have a clear idea about what the Canucks true weaknesses are.

Whether or not we trade one of our goalies plus whoever at that time remains to be seen. There may still not be a partner willing to give Gillis the return he is looking for.

In that case we will probably trade a second or third round pick for a gritty 4th line centerman and Lappierre plays on the 3rd line.

Seriously, we have what ~3.5M in Cap space, we have 2 Goalies that are spectacular and either of them can be moved to free up a huge amount of Cap space and we have too many players that makes the team disjointed.

What I mean is that we have a first line that is solid, we have too many players competing for the 2nd line and AV puts the wrong players on lines. We have Higgins, Raymond, Booth, Kassian who could all be on the 2nd line and then we have a great 3rd C in Schroeder and a great winger in Hansen, Raymond has been stellar on that line, so no reason to blow that up.

Are we happy with the AMEX Line being our 2nd line? I don't think so. Instead trade one of them along with one of our goalies and get someone of SUBSTANCE.

Look at what the past Cup winners have done, made huge acquisitions before going onto win the cup even though on paper they already had an amazing team. Case in point? LA Kings acquiring Jeff Carter.

Moreover, by not having a solid 2nd line it leads to our 4th line being weak as a skilled player who isn't tough is on a line that is meant to be rough and tough. Our 4th line should be Weise - Lappy - Volpatti.
