brownky
Not afraid to call out the refs, defend his players, coach with emotion and stands up for himself and doesnt call out his player through the media. Oh and he's also one of the longest serving coach in NHL history, so he must be doing something right.
Erik Karlsson
I'm a huge ruff fan, but he did kind of call out his players out last year (deservedly so) at the end of that disasterous season. Although in his defence he called out "the veteran core" without naming names at that point. After the way that core played for the back half of the season for the most part (or the whole season in Derek Roy's case) I don't know of him burying his players by name though. It's possible (I don't watch every news conference by every coach...) he has though. There is no limit to how much I want Lindy Ruff in Vancouver. RUPERTKBD
Yeah that's true, but the team might not necessarily need a "better" coach, but maybe one that can get the team pumped up and playing 100% for 60 minutes every game and not at 75% every game. I'll admit I've been impressed with how he's handled Schroeder so far and Kassian. I was pretty worried about that at the start of the season. brownky
I understand what you're saying, but I believe that this "motivation" thing is a bit of a myth perpetuated by people who watch movies like Friday Night Lights and believe that an impassioned speech is all it takes to achieve victory. My experience is that different players need different kinds of motivation. Some guys need to be yelled at, while some need a pat on the back. A coach's job is to recognize which is which and act accordingly. I believe AV does this well and a big part of the reason is because he has been with the core for most, if not all of their careers. Remember all the flack that AV used to give guys like Wellwood and O'Brien? These are guys who need a kick, rather than a pat, once in a while. Even Kesler gets called out on occasion. OTOH, Players like the twins don't need to be told, or told off. They have shown over several years that they will always "figure it out" on their own. When people bring up the complaint about AV not talking to his players, they fail to understand that the Canucks are a verteran team, with several players who, like the twins, require a minimum of talking to. This is a strength of AV's IMO, not a weakness and I think it would be a huge mistake to bring in a Tortorella type coach who does nothing but berate players all the time. Trebreh
So this coach sticks up for his players instead of accusing them of using injuries as an excuse or rushing them back before they want to play (Willie Mitchell, Hodgson, Kesler) He wears his heart on a sleeve And he isn't afraid to give his players crap when they aren't working hard Now I think the motivational and heart goes to Ruff how about the other side of coaching? The Xs and Os, strategy, systems etc How is he?

RUPERTKBD
Well..maybe the problem is the wrong motivational techniques for the wrong players. As for them being veterans...who cares? If they are not executing and not putting in the effort they need to be dealt with. So, are they entitlemed to not perform because they are vets? How did HUnter deal with the vets on Washington when he got that group to perform? Based on what I've seen this year, it's the vets that are crappong the bed not the rookies. Bananas
AV is the worst coach in the league at playing rock paper scissors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMxzU6hxrNA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTOwk8J7Ri4 Too bad he coaches with the same idealism... allstar_luongo1
How many games this year have the Canucks had the lead and gone on to lose the game? Check the stats and that should pretty much sum up the job AV has done with this group of players. They've lost interest and quite frankly so have I watching this team constantly giving up 2 goal leads. We need a coach who can push this team to the top, not one that constantly makes up excuses as to why we lose.
Papayas
6 wins and only 1 against a decent opponent. Sorry...this team has been playing mediocre hockey since they beat the Bruins last January.
Bananas
6 wins without our second line against nhl teams is an amazing record. You are talking like the team we faced were ahl teams. We literally lost our whole second line wih Kesler and booth out. Any other teams with that many second line players down would be fighting for a playoff spot now. Smashian Kassian
I agree 100%. People are blind if they think this team is doing well. We have the luxury of a terrible division. Put us in any other division in the west and we would likely be out of a playoff spot right now.
Smashian Kassian
Whenever I see these AV threads pop up I always wonder... who would you replace him with that is a coach with NHL experience that would be an upgrade and that is available?
