Two notes; Huet is of course a free agent. No charge other than contract. So does that mean framework to move a goalie is in place?
But playing in Europe, I'm pretty sure he has to clear waivers. It's almost like you have to pay him a decent wage so he clears waivers to sctually get him to make it through???
Is that what you mean by underpayment...
I first broke this rumour late last season(not to be a braggart, but...), apparently it's now resurfacing, pending AND intoxicating. After completing a stellar stint over in Europe, Van is said to be "hotly pursuing" Cristobal Huet-yes, it's amazing, isn't it..?
This breakthrough offers papers the potentially tantalizing headline: "Huet, Lou-Is In The News!"
My observation is the Canucks under Gillis were first consumed by skills and under riding characteristics. Now size and under riding characteristics. Balance would allow more predictability in our later round drafting.
After the first round? Proof will be in who comes out and makes it. But you can scout, really, just three things;
- performance against top talent. Its why CHL and SEL guys who excel get looked at so hard. see Corrado!
- skills! puck possession, shot, skating, positioning, passing, balance but don't underate applied techniques like hitting, forecheck, board battles...
- athletic ability, speed, size, strength, agility, explosiveness (see Stamkos), endurance.
Effectively; when you have strengths in all 3, and limited weaknesses you are a top pick. Top picks with weaknesses are the risky one's. But plenty turn up who simply are missing a resume without top competition. Hansen for example had athleticism and skill, but needed experience learning how to play it against a reasonable calibre before he started to be successful. But you might or might not learn enough; which why development, patience and luck are all factors.
People say you can scout these next 3, but really they are a crap shoot.
- "compete" level really, this should be a given, but again Hansen, Burrows also come to mind... This includes preparation and training; see Gaunce at Gary Roberts camp before being drafted; top scores at 4 or 6 major draft tests, Sedins fitness...
- game smarts
They are good under riding characteristics.But they may not make a difference if you cant shoot, or if you consistently get plastered because your undersized. Perhaps they could be how you pick between the 12th and 13th pick, 40th and 41st...? Fundamentals should allow a better success rate than we are experiencing!
After 5 years of drafting, you would like to think we could call up more than just Schroeder who was not a late round pick. Check Detroit who has 4 or 5 guys, including playing top pairing D, filling holes while things surface. Corrado is going to be a gem, but 5 years is too long and he is not ready to fill a line up spot yet.
The real question is how we do after the 1st round.
So far I think only Corrado is the only one that looks great. Everybody else is a question mark. Historically we've been awful from the 2nd on, with less than a handful making The Show.
