Oy Vey! The butthurt is strong on this one...

http://www.topspeed....s-ar147602.html

You would think that with Chevrolet’s release of its high-powered SS sports sedan, a lot of countries would be chomping at the bit to have the car come to their roads.

Apparently, that’s not the case in Israel.

According to the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth via the Times of Israel, the Chevrolet SS will not be imported to Israel because it’s "Super Sport" name, or at least the shortened "SS" version of it, is similar to the Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary unit headed by one Heinrich Himmler under Adolf Hitler’s long reign of terror in Nazi Germany.

The same Yedioth report quoted Baruch Shuv, manager of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and chairman of the Organization of Partisans, Underground Fighters and Ghetto Rebels, saying that “the use of [the SS] name is very inappropriate."

"It is not a name that will bring them pride or success,” Shuv added.

Granted, we understand the position Israel is taking, and we’re not going to belittle the significance of the Jewish people’s plight during one of the most oppressive times in history, but c’mon guys… It’s an abbreviation for “Super Sport,” not some anti-Jewish conspiracy.

It’s also worth noting that this is the first time Chevrolet is branding the initials SS exclusively and not using the full Super Sport name on the model.

And if Israel has a big and justified problem with the use of the SS name and is taking the measure of keeping the car out of their country, then that’s their prerogative.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

The SS were a famous branch of the Nazi military.

Anyways, a few people may not be happy with the name, but that's no reason to ban the car completely. Although I am against the name for another reason: too easy to mix up with the Camaro SS.

You obviously meant to say notorious. Under the circumstances there is quite a difference, and therein lies the reason for the ban. I can say that I don't care either way, but I can see why the choice was made.

edit: I sure hope South Park will parody this in some way...

Probably want Chevrolet to just change the name for cars to be sold in Israel,; I can't really blame them. Products have to be renamed quite often to comply with local standards

Good cause it has a terribly boring design and what were they thinking when they were only gonna put an automatic in it?

Should be banned everywhere. Names the bottom of the issue here.

Given that the SS was a central player in Implementing the "Final Solution", such distaste of the "SS" abbreviation is quite understandable - it is pretty much a cultural imperative for Jews and Israel.

I thought it was the Camaro SS until you mentionned it.

I wouldn't really say this about being politically correct, some things just have too much negative connotation to it. The 'SS' is linked to 6 million+ slaughtered Jewish people, so it's not much of a stretch to think its offensive, especially in Israel. Although WW2 seems like a distant memory, it is still a relatively fresh war all things considered, with and estimated 1.5+ million veterans (not to mention thousands of concentration camp survivors) still alive today.

In this instance, SS means Schwachkopf Scheißkerl in reference to Israel.

So they rebadge for Israel. Not a big deal. Yes, Chevy has been using the SS name and badges on performance cars since the 60s so they see a lot of built in value to the name but products get name changes and much more for different markets all the time so why not this.

Just how big is the Israeli market for GM anyways.

Ugh no..? Why does it matter.

Two things don't always need to be correlated. The SS doesn't stand for the same thing.

GM shouldn't have to change the name at all they've had the SS name (Super Sport) has been a package on a lot of their cars since the 1961 Chevy Impala.

Time for sensitive oafs to get real. Sensitivity is what's ruining our society.

Because as stupid as it is, there are over-sensitive, politically correct idiots everywhere. GM should know this. Hence why it's bad marketing. Know your customers.

Chevrolet Sets New Global Sales Record During Q3 2012

Chevrolet sold more than 1.25 million vehicles around the world during the third quarter of 2012, representing a 3.1 percent increase compared to the same record-setting time period last year. The sales milestone marks eight straight quarters (2 years) of record-breaking sales for The Bow Tie brand.
Perhaps best of all is the fact that Chevy isn’t planning on decreasing its pace, as the brand plans to continue building momentum by introducing 25 new products around the world in 2013, with 13 of those models being introduced in the U.S. The product transformation plan includes vehicles such as the all-new Impala, all-new Silverado light duty pickup line, the SS performance sedan, Trax subcompact crossover, TrailBlazer midsize SUV and Colorado pickup truck, as well as the Spin MPV and Onix hatchback.

Yes, but banning a vehicle because it shares initials with something is absolutely ridiculous. We're not saying Jews should forget about the Holocaust.
