Who's our Jeff Carter?

As much as we love our quality guys, sometimes you may need to let some go to bring in a game-changer. It is widely accepted that teams (ours included) only have a limited time window to make a push for the Cup, after it would need time to rebuild.

This year, we might get far. But there must be someone out there who would fit like a glove in AV's system and would make us an even more serious threat to anyone.

Simple question: who would that game-changer be? In my view, Jeff Carter is the benchmark - he added tremendous value to the LA team last year. We need to stay realistic, e.g. "Crosby" and "Stamkos" are probably not the most reasonable answers.

The second question - who would you ship out to get the trade done? This is also important, as we need to have some clue what our team would look like after the trade. It may be a painful trade and it may involve some risks (e.g. letting one of our hot goalies go), but if it adds a lot more than it removes, maybe it's worth it.

Don't feel bad if you only have an answer for the first question, that may spark someone else's ideas.

PS. Sorry if this is covered elsewhere.

The only thing I want on this team is a dangerous top 6 player that can dangle and snipe, but the only way we could ever come close to that is with a schneider trade package and then who knows how the cap situation would work out. Trading Luongo won't bring back the player that we really need which is why I think we'll keep both goalies this season. With all of the injuries going around and the compacted schedule, it's not the worst idea to keep both of them. I want to see how a healthy and game-tested Kesler and Booth will play this season.

David Booth is our Jeff Carter. We need to give this guy a chance first. Write off the first 10 games. See how he plays in the final 10-15 games down the stretch.

I think Shane Doan could have been that kind of guy for the Nucks. A guy that is tough, determined, can score and is good defensively. Shane is the kind of player that can have a huge effect on his teammates. He never gives up and can spark the other players to keep digging away. Shane really should have his name on a SC.

With some good coaching and a lot of hard work, I believe Kassian could end up like that. Unfortunately, he's a few years away from that.

What about picking up Alfie from the Sens? TSN was starting some rumours the other night of the possibility that he may pull a Bourque and go to a contender to try and win a cup before he retires. He would be a great fit on this team. Not sure who we would have to give up tho, but I would imagine that he would think hard about coming to Van for obvious reasons. There's no way we could trade for Iginla, but maybe Alfie? Otherwise, I think we may just end up rolling with the guys we have and if it doesn't pan out this year, then make some major splashes. It's not like our window is closed after this year, we have a couple left in our core guys.

IMO we need another setup guy for the second line. Kesler is a two-way guy who prefers shooting to passing. Kassian and Booth are more powerforward types, neither have decent passing skills. Raymond again is a more of a shooter than a passer. We really need someone to set these players up. The reason our players play so well with the Sedins, is the Sedins are so good at finding the open man and setting him up for a goal, after the Sedins none of our forwards are that good at that.

Will throw a "dark horse" choice on the table: Byfuglien. But I would use him as a forward, not as a D.

Toughness, scoring touch, part of a team that is less likely to make the playoffs.

They need a goalie for sure (Pavelec is currently ranked #29 of 43). But since Luongo will probably not want to go to Winnipeg, the goalie idea may not work if Gillis wants CS to stay.

I need to preface this by saying that this is only HYPOTHETICAL.

Being the arm-chair GM that I am, here is a trade that I would do:

Package Alex Edler, Mason Raymond, Jannik Hansen, and Dale Weise to Winnipeg for Tobias Enstrom, Blake Wheeler and Chris Thorburn.

Here's what we give up...a potential elite d-man in Edler, who I think needs a change of scenery (when I see him, the look on his face is filled with stress and unhappiness...my wife and I used to see him having coffee at Trees Organic all the time a couple of years ago, and he looked happy and relaxed then); UFA candidate, a prairie boy who is having a bounce-back season in Mase; a life-long 3rd liner with good skills in Hansen; and a Winnipeg boy who can fit into the Jets lineup with ease in Weise (pending RFA who would probably be happy to sign with his hometown team).

Here's what we get...a legit PP specialist who is capable of playing the Brian Campbell/Dan Boyle role in Enstrom; an emerging power forward with speed, scoring touch and ability to go hard to the net in Wheeler (also an RFA); and a legit heavyweight in Thorburn (6'3" 230).

And if the Jets insisted, I'd throw in Fin as a sweetener in the deal.

We have a solid lineup, I honestly think that AV just needs to stop screwing with the lines every game and let the players mesh.

Sure, we maybe have a third liner on our second line, that could probably be improved, but how do you make a trade for an upgrade without upsetting the balance of the team and giving up other key players?

The Luongo/ Schneider tandem is our game changer.

Our offense is fine, it just needs to stabilize and get going.

It's not about who we acquire, it's about how the players react together.

Our team is deadly, seriously when healthy one of Raymond, Kassian, Higgins, Hansen is on the fourth line.

What needs to happen is our team needs to be firing at all cylinders.

As of now, it is not, and we're still winning games!

Edit: We have the pieces to be the best team in the league, so I really don't see why messing with our best weapon (goaltenders) right now would help this team by acquiring another player.
