Hey, so I got a bit of an issue. My grandma (89yrs old) just got summoned for jury duty, problem is that she doesn't understand a lick of English, and she's in poor health.

Is there anyway to get out if it? And what happens if she doesn't show up?

You can just write a letter explaining that, she'll be fine.

It's in the interest of both parties that your Grandma not be involved. A letter should suffice (if not your own letter, a letter from your Grandma's Doctor).

Shiznak at his best:

Considering their cap hit and age, I'd still take Bonino over Kesler.

There is only one solution: You must dress up as her and fulfill her duty. Be a man! Do the right thing!

There are both disqualifications (language difficulties) and exemptions (age - over 65) from jury duty that may apply.

Contact the local sheriff responsible for the the jury pool - the contact info is on the summons.

If you need to seek an exemption, do so well in advance of the jury selection date.

You can make your request online using the eResponse link noted on the front of your summons 24/7. You are provided a field to explain the reasons for your request for exemption using eResponse. Alternatively, you may submit your exemption request in writing by completing the juror certification form enclosed in the summons and returning it in the envelope provided.

If your exemption request is refused by the sheriff, you will be given the chance to apply to the judge to be exempted on the day of jury selection. Please note, unless you have been expressly exempted by the sheriff, you are required to attend for selection.

http://www.ag.gov.bc.ca/courts/jury_duty/info/exemption.htm

Jury Act Section 4:

Disqualification because of language difficulty

4 If the language in which a trial is to be conducted is one that a person is unable to understand, speak or read, the person is disqualified from serving as a juror in the trial.

http://www.bclaws.ca/EPLibraries/bclaws_new/document/ID/freeside/00_96242_01

Any person 65 years of age and over, can request an exemption from jury duty, on a one-time basis or permanently, depending on preference.

I requested an exemption when I submitted my certification form. When can I expect to hear whether it will be granted?

If you responded to your summons online using the eResponse system, you can log back in anytime, 24/7, and view your status under the profile tab. If you have been exempted (or disqualified), your status will indicate this. Also, if using eResponse, you can select to be notified of your request via email once the sheriff has processed your request. If you responded to your summons in writing, the sheriff will make every reasonable effort to contact you within 10 working days from the date your request for an exemption is received. However, until you have been specifically informed by the sheriff that you are exempt, you must attend at the date and time of jury selection.

To err is human - but to really screw up you need a computer.

Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done and why. Then do it.

The trick is to claim you're prejudiced against all races.

I was selected for jury duty while going to school full time and working full time.

I wrote a well put together letter and was granted an exemption.

A buddy told me that if you don't register to vote, either through your tax return or otherwise, then you'll never be summoned for jury duty. Not sure if that's true or not.

My grandma has never voted ever, since moving to Canada.

You don't have to know English to still hate black people.
Thinking so is prejudice to English speakers.

But she does have to be able to say it. Seeing as the OP mentioned English speaking as a problem, I was able to conclude that she would have to say this in English and not in any other language.
