B. McGrattan cleared Waivers. Van places. A. Volpatti on Waivers.

FriedgeHNIC
McGrattan clears waivers. Volpatti (VAN) now on

Was fairly sure McGrattan would clear, but Volpatti going on waivers a surprise. He's been reasonably good for us and certainly isn't bad as the 13th forward - something coming to replace him? Pinizzotto coming up? Trade?

A little more info from earlier today:

News1130Sports
Manny Maholtra won't talk - his agent won't talk and still no job within the organization announced.
Agent Wade Arnott says his free agent brother Jason had a medical setback but is ok now. He's calling teams again.
You can bet Arnott will call the #Canucks. He's been talking with them this week about Steven Pinnizzotto.

Pinizzotto was nearing healthy again, but had a small setback. Could they expect Volpatti to clear and want to try Pinizzotto out? It seems a bit premature since he hasn't played any games yet (I don't think) for the Wolves since being injured.

Ongoing edit for updates:

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie
Aaron Volpatti on waivers for 2 reasons. 1. Get him icetime. 2. Open roster spot for Steve Pinizzotto, coming off injured non-roster status.

Also:
TSNBobMcKenzie Once Pinizzotto is officially on VAN roster (after Volpatti clears or is claimed) SP can be sent to Chicago (AHL) for conditioning stint.
More from twitter:
News1130Sports Volpatti's agent Peter Cooney says his client is "dissapointed" because he wants to be in the NHL and in Vancouver.
Cooney was told by Canucks they like his client but that they want to free up a roster spot and get Volpatti more ice.
Cooney is confident Volpatti will be back in the NHL soon - in Vancouver or elsewhere.
sportsnetmurph #canucks need roster spot, Weise kills penalties+Volpatti doesn't. VAN didn't want to expose a d-man on waivers. Reasons for decision.
Also, Jonathan Willis put up an article on this in the Edmonton Journal:

...
A team looking for fourth-line depth and toughness could do worse than Volpatti, but it would not be a surprise if the 27-year old cleared waivers either.

Anyone know why? Unless we're calling someone up, this doesn't make sense. Aaron's played fine, and we were at the roster limit with him on the team. Maybe there's a trade coming?

Honestly, Volpatti is just going to do only so much for you. No goals. The odd hit. The odd fight. Not much 'hockey' at all, really.

But now what? Vandermeer? He'll offer a bit more pushback for the time being.

Haha, you know of one somewhere that's better than who we already have?

Vandermeer?

Have him play forward? But is more pushback what we really need? Is that the reason we're losing? Not really as far as I'm concerned.

Volpatti's not going to put up a lot of points, sure, but he's not going to shy away from a fight and has 42 hits in 16 games ( a few more than the odd hit). He also has 4 majors on the year, 2nd behind Weise with 6. I'm not sure who we have to come up that's an obvious improvement over any one of our other forwards to risk sending him down on waivers.

Oh, BTW guys, fighting =/= tough and grit. People don't usually fight in the playoffs, unless Torres just concussed one of your star players. It's about hits and whatnot, not fighting.

Still though, this move doesn't make any sense.. Weise is the better option since he plays the PK (and is pretty good at it) and understands the game, Volpatti is just there to hit and stuff. But still, he's the guy you need as your 13th forward...

If we re-call Ebbet i'm going home and crying in my room.

This is kind of strange. Like elvis said, pushback really isn't the issue and vandermeer wouldnt provide any more than volpatti except for a few more minutes played. He shoots left and so does anyone that is good enough for a call up so i cant see us doing it to get another right handed shot in there. Volpatti has played his role perfectly so i cant see any reason mike would want to get rid of him.

the only conclusion i can come to is were about to make a trade where we are getting more canuck roster players back then we are giving. Perhaps a goalie is finally on his way out?

Trade coming? Somebody getting called up? I can't really think of any other reason as to why Volpatti was put on waivers.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

Either Pinizzotto or Vandermeer are coming up I'm guessing... Or maybe they're trying to acquire a better 4th line guy?

True, but Volpatti actually hits and tries to intimidate the opposition (threatened Dillon after hit on Burrows)

And I can't agree more on your last statement

Pinizzotto has 327 PIMs in last 154 games over past 3 seasons in the AHL, Sounds like he plays a pretty hard game.

If it were about a D to play the right side, Andersson's been good for the Wolves but I wouldn't say so good that he'd deserve a call up when we still have seven other guys ahead of him. We'd likely try Barker (who can play right side) for a game before calling Andersson up. Even then we're sending down a forward, leaving us with only 12 and injuries would leave us short.

Nothing I can think of makes sense unless there is a trade in the works where we'd need the roster room. If that's the case, then I'd expect we'd even up the contracts with some prospects, but who knows.
