Can anyone explain how we went from having one of the deepest Centre depth chart to one of the weakest in 1 year and how Canucks management failed to see it coming?

2011-2012

Sedin
Kesler
Hodgson
Lapierre
Malhotra
Ebbett
Schroeder

2012-2013
Sedin
Schroeder
Ebbett
Lapierre
Kesler (injured... again)
Malhotra (forced to retire)

And if concerns about Malhotra's recovery from the injury was as severe as MG makes it out to be, why was Hodgson traded and not replaced?

Not missing anything. Lapierre > Ebbett, but can you see the latter as a 4th line centreman? :picard:

The only differences are we lost Hodgson, and 2 players got injured.

Manny hasn't been the same player since his injury, and I'd say the Cody trade was a wash as I've got high hopes for Kassian.

Schroeder hasn't looked out of place, and I don't think any of us would have predicted Kesler would be injured again so soon.

Gillis will likely bring in a center via trade or address our depth at center once the season is done.

Hodgson wanted to leave no sense keeping him, not like Gillis could see Kesler breaking his foot a week into his return kind of a freak injury. We also need size so Kassian>Hodgson for our teams needs.

Hope Burrows/Higgins can hold the fort as centers for the time being...

Also gives Kassian another chance with the Sedins.

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian
Booth - Burrows - Higgins
Raymond - Schroeder - Hansen
Ebbett - Lapierre - Wiese

Schroeder - an upgrade - replaces Hodgson.
Not that puzzling really.

easy malhotra retired
hodgson traded for Kassian

Even if we still had hodgson on our 2nd line, who would he play with?? Raymond, Hansen, Higgins. Pretty far from Pominville and Vanek. Still he's less than PPG and he's -6 or something.

It's not clear that Kassian > Hodgson for our team's needs to me.

Hodgson may well have been what allowed our power play to penalize teams that took runs at the Twins (which we couldn't do vs Boston).

Who knew that when players get injured, you have less players to put out on the ice.

The spin from the Canucks front office is that MG was already concerned about Malhotra's limited eyesight and ability to protect himself last season when he rejoined the team. Canucks medical staff also should have known about the possibility that Kesler would require off season surgery to clear up lingering injuries (IMHO it's an absolute failure if they didn't see it coming). They should have predicted the potential for both players to be out of the lineup for significant stretches during the season and made the necessary contingency plans to replace one or both of them.

Hodgson was a good center for us last year? Really?

Was he a team player?
Did he play for the betterment of the team?

Or was he selfish?

This is all based on what...what Mike Gillis told you?

He's not biased at all.

No - mine is based on reality - what's yours?

And is it biased?

Cody currently has 8 goals and 9 assists, but is -4. That means the opposition has scored 21 times while he is on the ice - which is approximately 1/3 of all the goals scored against the Sabres are scored on them while Cody is on the ice.

2011-12 --- 2012-13
Henrik = Henrik
Kesler = Kesler
Hodgson = Schroeder
Lappy = Lappy
Manny >> Ebbett

I don't see the issue here, although with injuries we probably need to get a 3C.

hodgson through 17 games last season:

3goals 4 assists -3

schroeder through 17 games this season:

2goals 3 assists -1

yeah i would say they are pretty close when compared equally. Hodgson has certainly taken a large step this year in his development only time will tell if schroeder can follow.

Last years Hodgson at this point = this years Schroeder at this point.

Last year Coho produced a bit more, but Schroeder is better defensively so its even.

Jason Arnott is still available. If you have the time you can also go to: http://stats.nhlnumb...com/free_agents, and have a look around. Not entirely confident that it's completely up to date though, to be honest.

We traded away a legit, up and coming center, for a winger. We did it at a time when 2 of our other centers had immediate and future injury concerns.

We acquired a veteran rental we knew wasn't gonna stick around.

We had little in the prospect pool.

........................

It's not some big mystery.

you clearly don't know how +/- works, good try though... he has actually been on the ice for 30 goals against this season
