Not sure how many times this has to be said, but he can't be traded for a full calendar year. Meaning if the trade deadline is in feb like it was last year they will have to keep him right through next season. At which time he will be an RFA again with a minimum qualifying offer amount of $6.5 million
Yup, here's my post from the other thread:
Not only is it potentially a year and a half later, so that the Avs might have to qualify him to keep his rights going into the summer, but they'll have to do it at $6.5M. That's what his cap hit will be unless they front load it, and who knows if O'Reilly would accept that.
Would he be easy to trade at moderate or worse production when his cap hit is $6.5M?
EDIT: I looked it up for previous trade deadlines.
So the Avs matched same day, probably prepared that the deadline would be at or around this day in 2014. If they matched right away, then they might be able to trade him at the deadline next year and let someone else worry about him if it doesn't work out.
