Majority of Canadians want fighting ban

If you're going to ban fighting because of the rare occasion a player may bang his head into the ice on a take down then you might as well remove contact from the game altogether. The chances of suffering a concussion and other head injuries and injuries in general are far greater through body checks than they are from fighting.

The opinion of those who are willing to pay always counts. More than the opinion of the product provider (ie: club) and performer (ie: player), each of which has it's own money interests at the heart of their opinions.

It's always about the money.

If fighting stopped the cheap shots then i would be all for it but i don't see that happening. I hated what Keith did to Daniel... like really really really hated it. Did it happen cuz we didn't have an enforcer? oh but they say vancouver is the dirtiest team?

Staged fighting is not entertaining to me... I would watch UFC if i needed to watch a real trained fight.

and i did not read the whole op too long

It's a circular argument. There is no proof that fighting decreases or increases cheap shots, rat like behaviour or creates respect. Cheap shots, Rats, lack of respect existed just as much, if not more than, 30 years ago when we had bench clearing brawls.

Like most, I like a good tilt. I rather keep it in, but wouldn't be too upset if they severely restricted it like the other major sports. I don't think it would have as big as an impact on the game as the hardcores would have you believe.

Also, Matt Cooke is 'trying' to clean up his act, not because he is afraid of all the fighting he has to do or getting his butt kicked, but because he realized that he is going to be out of a job if he doesn't.

You have two experienced ex-NHL player and coach saying otherwise;

1) PJ Stock: on HNIC commented that Canadian college hockey banned fighting. Stock said most players became far more aggressive realizing they would not have to defend themselves for cheap shots they handed out. Cross checks, slashing, spearing... very dirty hockey.

2) Paul Maurice: On TSN commented that KHL hockey was extremely dirty as fighting is banned. He said that the talented players in particular were targeted by players who did not have the talent to hurt the team if they were ejected. He said it was so bad that the refs were losing control of games.

The telling evidence is NHL players who by a hugh majority want fighting retained. They understand the role fighters play and most fans do not.

If that is your only problem with banning fighting, then dirty/aggressive playing can be remedied by fining them according to the seriousness of the dirty play-to-damage done ratio. It's how other sports deal with it.

Hockey players are not scientists. We have specialists in society for a reason. They give us information on things that we might like to do or that we do, in general, which turn out to be bad for us. If these acts take place in the form of a public event, community, or social partnership, it is the responsibility of its citizens to ensure rules are passed to mitigate damage.

If hockey players want to bang their heads against each other in their own private games, go ahead.

I'm Canadian. I'm a fan of hockey, not fighting. There is a reason I don't watch UFC or mixed martial arts.

Heard a couple of sports experts or psychologists talking about this one time ... can 't remember who but it always stayed with me.

They said that the play of hockey - the fast pace and physicality - is contained in a boarded, walled ice-surface ... we all know that. Unlike other sports, a player cannot step out of bounds - the play is completely self-contained between walls. And so is the aggression, there's really nowhere for aggression to go but on the ice. Players can't step out of bounds and take the fight off the ice - unless it's underneath the stands or in the tunnels.

So fighting - organically - in hockey is more of an outlet for aggression. Kind of like a kettle of boiling water before it whistles.

That often mounting aggression throughout a game can't go anywhere but on the ice. So when you hear people saying that the game gets dirtier or there's more cheap shots or stick work when you ban fighting, it completely makes sense... If they can't fight, the aggression finds another outlet.

It's pretty obvious why fighting has always been in the game. It actually serves a purpose like I mentioned above. People's first reaction is always to ban it rather than understand why it's there in the first place and why it always has been ... there's a reason obviously. And from this perspective you can actually manage it or deter it.

I don't mind it in the organic nature of tempers or frustration boiling over... when it's tactical or pre-meditated, that can be dangerous.
