They have just enough cap space to sign Perry if he wants to stay

Yea but if Kesler continues to suck, I'd rather have Getzlaf at 8.25 than a useless Kesler.

That's an if.

And he hasn't sucked when he's healthy, not sure what you're talking about.

Yea, but do they wanna spend 8 mil on Perry? Probably not.

He's gonna want the same deal as Getzlaf.

stupid. inconsistent and overrated.

Joe Thorton version 2.0

.........Unfortunately we don't have a centre to compare or even come close to him. Please don't be ignorant enough to suggest Kesler. He's not in the same ballpark.

GM's around the league are hating this deal. Sets a benchmark. Quite a high one!

Actually he is in the same ballpark.

In his previous 3 seasons, Kesler has only had 5 less points than Getzlaf, and had 39 more goals than him. Plus add in 3 Selke nominations and one win.

But ignorant Canucks fans seem to like to hate on their own players and act like they're not as good as any other player. I don't understand the sudden hate on for Kesler from Canucks fans. Pathetic show of loyalty from alot of people really.

.....You're obviously correct points wise but unlike Getzlaf,Kesler has the ability to make his line mates play worse. This in itself makes Kesler an inferior player...possibly out in left field.

Wow... long term AND ridiculously high AAV? Not only that, now Perry will be asking for something similar.

I hope people appreciate Kesler's contract now.

Getzlaf is the better player, but not 3.2 million dollars better.

.....Good to see that you at least agree he is the better player.

Then how do you explain Samuelsson and Raymond both having career years playing on his wings?

Yes Kesler hasn't been able to lift up his linemates in the past couple seasons, but really look who he was playing with. Raymond has been on his butt as many times as he was on his feet in the last couple seasons. And Booth is a complete puck hog that knows how to drive to the net but not what to do when he gets there.

I'd like to see Getzlaf turn Raymond and Booth into anything more than the third liners they've been in the last couple seasons. Last time I checked he plays on a line with a former rocket richard winner and 50 goal scorer. And he also plays on a powerplay with one of the best powerplay players in the game, Teemu Selanne.

What has the Canucks powerplay done since two years ago?

.....Good to see that you at least agree he is the better player.

I know he's the better player, I never denied that. But to say that he's not even in the same ballpark as him is just wrong.

Getzlaf has gotten his fair share of criticism the last few seasons too.

Getzlaf had ONE bad year... and quite honestly the whole team was a mess.

He's their CAPTAIN. They had to keep him at all costs. Overpaid, yeah for sure. That contract is reaching to the likes of Crosby/Malkin. But this is similar to E.Staal, in which they had to overpay to keep their CAPTAIN.

With Getzlaf signing the extension, Anaheim might just release or trade Perry and/or Ryan. We must be claiming either or possibly, both. That way, Vancouver will be able to stack their roster.

wow huge cap hit, similar to eric staal. Very good player though. Too bad they all but cant keep perry probably. Or they trade bobby ryan get a 2nd line center and re sign perry

Yes agree, but they will trade Ryan, likely for some youth. I could see a good deal being Ryan and a pick for Bozak and Gardiner (crap for Anaheim they'd have to trade back for him). But would give them a good second line center and a young pp QB, both relatively inexpensive.

Leafs get a terrific scoring winger.

Then they keep Perry.

But yes well overpaid but it sends a signal to Perry as well, if money is the issue don't worry bc you'll get more in Anaheim than anywhere else.

Clearly Anaheim is saying our 2 guys to build around are Getzlaf and Perry and I get that from a fan point of view.

Smart move by the Ducks in that sense..now only reason Perry leaves is bec he just wants to move elsewhere. Who wouldn't want constant sun and 9 million for playing hockey?

Hard to turn that down

Damn, money in the bank for Getzlaf. Overpaid IMO, dumb move as well since they have to sign Perry for at least that amount now.

But it wasn't a 12-15 year deal, front end loaded.

Hahaha, so the lockout taught us nothing. Glad that we got that sorted.

As good as Getzlaf is, this contract is a bit absurd. $7-7.5 is the number I expected

Oii; the market for a 220 lb top line centre?

Hope he becomes a Bryant Reeves for them...

edit: yes he's better than that, but this smells of being held hostage.

Brutal deal Anaheim is screwed. Cue Perry trade hopefully not to the Canucks if MG has any sense. Which I believe he does.

If this contract trailed off with 3 years of $1m which used to be the norm for long term contracts until the lockout, it would have only been a $6.3 cap hit - definitely what he's worth.

At least now the deal reflects the actual paid value. Its just that player salaries were expected to go down as well, but apparently Getzlaf's agent argued otherwise.
