4 dead in US shooting; police search for suspect

HERKIMER, N.Y. - A man suspected of shooting to death four people and wounding two others was believed to be in an abandoned building surrounded by police Wednesday evening, police said.
Police officers were fired on from the building while looking for 64-year-old Kurt Myers, state police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said. D'Amico said at least one officer returned fire, but Myers' status was uncertain.
"We're in no rush to bring this to a conclusion," D'Amico said, adding that the main objective was to make sure no one else was hurt.
Police said the rampage started with a fire in Myers' apartment in the village of Mohawk on Wednesday morning. D'Amico said the gunman drove to a barber shop around the corner and used a shotgun shot to kill two customers, whom he identified as Harry Montgomery, 68, and Michael Ransear, 57. The shop's owner, John Seymour, and another customer, Dan Haslauer, were listed in critical condition at a regional hospital.
D'Amico said the gunman then drove to a mechanic's shop in nearby Herkimer and used the shotgun to kill Thomas Stefka, an employee, and Michael Renshaw, a customer.
"Everybody's on lockdown, all the schools, the college, the village," said Amanda Viscomi, Herkimer's acting clerk-treasurer. "It's very, very scary."
D'Amico said police had had no communication with Myers, whose only known police record was a 1973 drunken driving arrest.
Police were positioned in front of a block of small businesses topped with apartments Wednesday evening. A local businessman, Fred Weisser, said police were trying to get people out.
"They're sending in a robot to check the place out," Weisser said by telephone. "I guess we're stuck. We're between him and the cops. I don't want to step out and get clipped by a sniper."
Myles Smith, who lives in an apartment above the shops, said by phone he had heard police trying to talk to Myers.
"The snipers on the roof are sitting there," Smith said. "I ain't seen a whole lot of movement. I heard about five gunshots. I keep hearing them trying to talk him out, but I don't think he's coming out."
Neighbours said they barely knew Myers, who rarely spoke.
"He would walk by himself. He was kind of a loner. No wife," next-door neighbour Traci Randall said.
Gary Urich said Myers wouldn't even say "Hi" to him when walking by his porch.
"I said, 'How are you doing?' No response. He just walked by," he said.
Michele Mlinar, who tends bar at Cangee's Bar and Grille in Herkimer, said Myers frequently went in and had a bottle or two of beer and left without speaking to anyone. She said he was always alone and she didn't even know his name until police released his mug shot.
Cangee's owner Candy Rellin called Myers "just an odd little man."
Guns and ammunition were found inside an apartment at Myers' building, but it was unclear whether they were from his apartment.
James Baron, the mayor of Mohawk, said he didn't know Myers but knew several of the people who were shot. The mayor described the village as close-knit and friendly, "the kind of place where you'd say, 'Oh, it would never happen here.'"
___
Associated Press writers Chris Carola and Mary Esch in Albany contributed to this report.

The US just needs to do away with the whole guns thing. It's falling so flat on its face that it's not even funny anymore.

Either train the whole population how to properly use a gun or restrict the guns.

Sure an idiot can still obtain it but one has to wonder if these guns were legally purchased. For sure the shotgun was - but it was loaded, which should not be allowed.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

What amazes me is how they still think they are the best country in the world while the entire world is laughing at them.

What makes me laugh is they talk about the right for guns for the eventuality that they have to overthrow the government. Uh...so voting isn't an option?

Besides if the US government goes rogue, what good is a .50 BMG or an AK-47 going to do against a UAV with hellfire missiles? Or worse yet, an apache helicopter?

As one Apache pilot said. Don't run from an Apache, you'll just die out of breath.

I don't even understand how the US can not do anything about this. It blows my mind that some people still believe the gun laws are fine after seeing what happened to those children at Sandy Hook.

RIP to these people. It's horrifying to see how cowardly your politicians are in the face of the NRA.

I hope Obama can get something through Congress to get some sort of control over this- it's disgusting. How can they call themselves a civilized nation when sh!t like this seems to happen every day.

It's in a more rural area of New York State - like as if this shooting happened in Prince George.

I think you have to be cognizant about pick-pocketers though.

who are "they"?

one person killing four other people every so often is not indicative of the general cultural disposition--it's not a reflection of what's "normal" for a citizen to do at all.

unless you are saying that america isn't a civilized country based on the actions of a few uncivilized citizens, but obviously you aren't, because then we could say that same garbage about canada and every other country... ever.

Disgusting self entitlement, disregard for public safety, stupidity, and paranoia is common among gun owners down South. Granted I don't care about the average Joe either but at the same time I don't want to see a bunch of people, children, or both get blown away.

That would work except it doesn't count as laughing when so many people here go down south to spend their hard earned dollars in the US for cheaper goods.

Looks to me they're the ones laughing despite people regularly shooting each other up.

Naw the ones laughing are the CEO's and the rich elites, they got people hating on each other for reasons of race, nationality and religion instead of worrying about unemployment, inequality, the growing wealth gap and stuff like that

This guy clearly has not been paying attention to actual uprisings.

Then again, despite so many gun owners, Americans, while eager to kill each other (as in, the other commoners), are highly fond of their corrupt politicians, like Obama.

Speaking of Obama and guns, it's hilarious how much of a boon he's been to the gun industry with all of this gun control talk.. record sales on guns and ammunition, plus skyrocketing stocks. They have a two year wait list for AR-15's in some places now because they're so backlogged.

Most uprisings take place in small areas and involve a resistance movement that lacks for weapons and manpower, they also usually involve some fairly readily identifiable cultural or ethnic group.

Also, most restistance groups lack effective foreign support, I wouldn't count on any of those being the case in a U.S. situation.

Good thing Venezuela isn't considered "developed", given how this forum praises Hugo Chavez... Venezuela's gun homicide rate per 100,000 is almost 50, to the US's 3 -- and people call the US a war zone? The US's southern neighbours are at 10. Not that this graph tells me too much about a country's overall safety. I'm smart enough not to move to Chicago or Washington DC, two cities which were just as dangerous with guns bans as without.

Banning guns in the US would solve nothing. Criminals and psychos would still obtain them anyway, and the innocent would have no way to defend themselves. Guns are not the issue. It's the outright decay of American culture and society. The United States is a country built to be governed and lived in by a moral people. As the morals decline, so does the society, and in turn the country. Violence of any kind is just a part of the bigger picture.

The gun laws in places like NY are already more restrictive than Canada, and you already know that the punishments for breaking just about any law in the U.S. are severe.
