Lain isn’t the only college free agent the Canucks are chasing. They are in on Western Michigan defenceman Dan DeKeyser, who most think is going to either Tampa or Detroit.
They’re interested in Andrej Sustr, the Zdeno Chara-sized blueliner from Nebraska-Omaha.
And there’s Antoine Laganiere who goes to Yale. That school alone is enough right there to make the Canucks swoon. But at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, he already looks like a pro.

I really, really hope they get Sustr.

Sustr and Laganiere please

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

To give an idea of his size...

The guy who hugs him, number 15, is Josh Archibald. He's 5'10, and Sustr is more than a head taller than him at 6'8

mobile defensemen name Kenny Morrison who I definitely would not mind watching if I were the Canucks. Plays on same team as DeKeyser 6'2 RIGHT shot just like Sustr but its tough, who wouldn't want a Chara sized player? Hope he realizes he'll get a chance eventually to play in the NHL if he signed with the Canucks

players usually sign with teams that are in need of a slot to be filled and perhaps that player can do

think of Lain, knows we seek bottom 6 centermens. perfect fit. "i'll get my chance" mentality and BOOM we sign him.

If I'm a UFA I look at the Canucks prospect pool and the age of the team and realize that there's going to be some opportunities here in the next couple years.

ESPECIALLY Sustr. A big, physical d-man that has a right shot?

He's perfect

If we can't get DeKesyer (The best available) I would like to get Sustr and/or Taker.

Lagainere wouldn't be bad either. But I want the others a tad more.

Sounds like the same thought process Justin Schultz went through when he signed with the Oilers...these college kids are smart -- since the money is the same with whoever they sign, the opportunity to play becomes a significant criteria for their decision. Too bad Schultz was vilified for that.

You’ll notice that while Sustr doesn’t put the puck in the net with much regularity, his assist total indicates a player with good vision and the ability to distribute the puck. Those who watched Sustr play for Nebraska-Omaha during the Ice Breaker tournament in Kansas City last weekend, surely noticed that the young man also makes an excellent first pass out of the zone, plays a calm and collected game under pressure, and skates surprisingly smoothly for a big man.

He’s also capable of absolutely wiring the puck when given space, as Notre Dame goaltender Steven Summerhays found out in the championship game of the Ice Breaker tournament.

Closest NHL comparable is probably Tyler Myers. Most people will immediately think Chara, but Sustr apparently doesn't play with much of an edge. He uses his positioning and hockey sense rather than his body.

Hopefully that can change once he packs on some more pounds. He seems a little light fr 6'8" right now.

We have to be getting close to our 50 contract limit. We only have, what, 3 sliding contracts?

I think this puts us at 51 contracts - 3 sliding = 48, not leaving us much wiggle room until the offseason.

When you're that tall, being physical with guys who have a lower center of gravity is not a easy a you'd think. Players that tall need to learn to be smart with their positioning and stick before they learn to physically dominate.

Neither was Chara when he first broke into the NHL with the Islanders...he didn't start playing physical until 3-4 seasons into his NHL career.

The only big, talented guys that I can recall stepping into the NHL and being a dominant physical force immediately are Scott Stevens, Chris Pronger and to some degree Luc Phaneuf. As we all know, love them of hate them, Stevens and Pronger were very special players.

DeKeyser is doubtful, he knows he has a better shot at cracking the lineup in TB and Det. Apparently the Wings are his fav team too.

Sustr and Laganierre would be perfect additions to the Canucks and have a fair shot of making the team next season. Hopefully the farm moves to Abbotsford so we can watch these guys.

When did I say that? He's physical because he uses his body to position himself properly and get in the way. Bruisers and goons will always have a place in the league

I'd probably say Cody Franson as a comparable, as he's known as a gentle giant but Myers is good too.

I have a feeling we'll be dumping some contracts at the trade deadline. Prospects can always be moved for late round picks if need be too.

One thing to remember about Sustr is that he's only about 215 lbs. Let him put on 15 more before evaluating his physical game, usually something underdeveloped in NCAA players compared to say WHL.

not to nitpick a player i know virtually nothing about, but that goal was far more lucky than it was beauty.
