Why did so many people think we were "back" after last game?

DownUndaCanuck makes some good points. Los Angeles last year squeaked into the playoffs, and if anyone remember the '94 Canuck team, they barely made the playoffs also, but both of those teams were big, physical teams.

That being said, this team is pretty gutted down the middle. It's very hard to assess this team without our Selke-winning second liner, and with our defense/faceoff/pk specialist Malhotra anchoring the third line. Without real centres on the 2nd and 3rd lines, we have a lot of good parts (Hansen, Higgins, Raymond, Booth) but no pivot to give these guys the puck and create offense. Not to mention the way those two centres can shut down opposing lines.

I'm not saying I thought the Canucks were "back" after that lopsided Nashville win, but with Andrew Ebbet having the night he was, we had a second line- at least that night, and that made a difference to how the team looked. But Ebbet doesn't look like a long-term solution to our centre woes, and even having a healthy Kesler back still leaves us in need of one for our third line. So I think that a trade has to be the way to go, I can't see another solution right now.
