If he got paid around $2.5 million it might be worth the risk to keep him. However at $4.5 million and plus the salary cap is going down, he has to go. He's a big strong power forward, basically the only Canuck apart from Kassian who's willing to take the puck hard to the net. He can hit, he's fast and he's capable of scoring 30 goals. That combination is a rare one. Why do you think everyone want's big, skilled forwards? Why do you think MG drafted Gaunce and Jensen? Why do you think Boston and L.A won the Cup? Because of big, fast hitting forwards who can score. Apart from Booth, we're very thin in that department. Burrows doesn't know how to deliver a big hit. Kesler hasn't knocked a guy flat in a while. All we really have are Higgins and Kassian in that area. Players like Booth win Cups. His poor regular season play gets a pass because he had no training camp and just a handful of games to get into mid-season form. And we have no record for how Booth performs in the pre-playoff stretch, except for one year, last year. In the three weeks leading into the playoffs last year he was a minus player and had one goal in eleven games. Including those 11 games, the playoffs, and his performance this year, that's 2 goals in 28 games. One of those goals was handed to him generously for an open net. You're romanticizing his role out of proportion by imagining players who are "like him" but, really, he himself doesn't actually do a whole lot. In otherwords, players who go to the dirty areas, use there size, use power, be physical, be gritty, work hard, good forecheckers, and great around the next with size, power and in the dirty areas. Smashian Kassian Posted March 17, 2013 Share Posted March 17, 2013 Smashian, while I agree with you completely that the lack of these types of players is why we're in the position we're in now, it's a really long stretch to compare David Booth to this group. Maybe a couple of guys on this list, but otherwise I don't know which Booth you're thinking of. Sure he has speed and the ability to go to the front of the net, but that's really it. He doesn't pass or see anyone else on the ice...he just puts his head down and goes when he has the puck. Obviously it doesn't work because he's only scored two goals in his last 30 games. He's certainly not a really physical player in the sense that he scares anyone...certainly not like many of the players on your list. Sure he's been more physical lately and has laid out a couple of players with nice hits, but I wouldn't consider him a physical player in the sense of being a heavy forechecker who can wear down defencemen physically. I think there's value in having a player like Booth on this team, but with a $4.25 Million cap hit for two more seasons after this one, his lack of production, his injury woes and with the salary cap going down, it just makes sense that he's a likely buyout candidate. And if MG is seriously thinking about buying him out this summer, then I think we've seen the last of Booth, even if he is medically cleared to return before the end of the season or playoffs simply because of the inability to amnesty him if he gets hurt again.
