Say what you want about the Canucks but there are some heart and soul players on this team like Hansen and Burrows who flat out know how to win, and have kept us from completely tanking this year. If we get healthy, this team still has a chance to make some noise in the playoffs. For now, Philadelphia is in worse shape, but I think they will rebound. They definitely have some problems in goal and on defense, but aren't like the Oilers in that they have some veteran leadership to teach the younger players. We all wish Gillis could pull the trigger on a deal to make us better now or in the future, but despite that frustration, he is delivering the goods on making us younger and bigger. Vancouver is still in good shape going forward: Tanev and Schroeder have emerged and Jensen and Gaunce are looking very good in the pipeline. Hopefully we can move a goalie and a defenceman for prospects, and reload that way, but of course lots of teams will be looking to do that with the cap coming down. Even if we end up getting rid of Luongo, Booth and Ballard for nothing, it won't be the end of the world.

The Canucks are in far more trouble in the long run. Philadelphia have some great young forwards, while the Canuck forwards are only getting older. As for defence, we have next to no defensive prospects. Edler, Tanev, Connautan and Corrado are this team's future on defence and right now they don't stack up nicely against their counterparts like Peitrangelo, Letang, Hamilton and Schultz.

The only thing the Canucks have is good goaltending set for the next 5ish years with Luongo and Schneider. Lucky for us this is a goalie's game.

You need to take a look at philly's extremely shallow prospect pool, you are way off. a few quality young forwards do not make them better than the Canucks.

the proof is in the production, and the future looks no better for Philly.

they need to make a whole lot of moves

the Canuck's oldest stars are still point a gamers.

folks here are getting carried away with a bunch of doomsday dumbdown.

Philly's problem is their D and they know it.

There is a reason they made a push for Weber and there are rumours of them going after Brent Burns. They are desperate for a #1 D man to replace Chris Pronger - and now the injured Braydon Coburn

Neither team is screwed. The NHL is not a crippling league to make a turnaround in. The salary cap keeps teams in check and keeps the availability of various types of players often open. Plus over 50% of the NHL will make the playoffs with 16 of 30 teams making the playoffs.

In 2007 Philadelphia won 22 games and had 57 points easily taking last place with the Coyotes holding 67 points in 2nd to last. The next year the Flyers were in the ECF and then the SCF 2 years later.

Montreal is having a great season, last year they were last place in the East.

The NHL is all over. A team has to be really poorly run to maintain failure.

Zack Kassian will have a break through season next year. I expect Schroeder to also have a break through.

Tanev is a future Top 2 D on this hockey club. Connauton has a ton of potential as does Frank Corrado. Eddie Lack is a very skilled young goaltender.

Brendan Gaunce is a gritty highly skilled forward. Niklas Jensen will be a top 6 forward in the NHL barring some development screwup.

Oh, and the Sedin Twins will be playing until their late 30s. Gillis will be staying onboard until a new group of guys comes in to turn this into a fast, young team. I gurantee that our next general manager will come from within this organization.

Roberto Luongo will yield a prospect or two which would be great for this organization. Whoever we pick in the draft will have a lot of potential to do well in this league.

A guy like Max Domi or Curtis Lazar could go a long way into turning this into a fast, young team in five years. We also need a talented young dman.
