A hit to the head? Really? You consider what Alex Edler did last night 'a hit to the head'

Ya I do, it's primary contact was the head
If that was Shane doan on Cort Schneider you guys would be saying 5 games

Smith didn't look to injured when he was tuning Edler in the head afterwards.

I knew this would be the outcome and I'm still choked. Now we have two potential game changing players on our team labeled as "repeat offenders." Hansen and Edler better not touch anyone in the post-season. Awesome.

Side note for those who keep referencing the Lucic/Miller incident. IIRC this was the hit that galvanized the league to take action against players who hit goaltenders, like we are seeing now.

I agree with the suspension, prob shoulda been 1 game. Let's not confuse Shanahan's insanely inconsistent discipline with the truth: Edler made a stupid play and injured their goalie. We'd expect a suspension too if it happened to one of our goalies.

I'm actually not terribly upset Edler is out of the lineup for a bit, his D-pay makes me cringe this season.  Maybe it'll give him time to reflect on his game a little bit.

Why does all the blame have to be on Edler?

Frankly, I'm of the belief that the onus should be on both players. The hitter to make sure he's throwing a legal bodycheck and on the other player to not put themselves into a vulnerable position.

I'm sorry, but if Edler is stupid on this play - Mike Smith is an idiot too. How many times has he been hit behind the net there? Most notably, Shaw on Smith. If Smith wants to run a pick behind the net, so be it, but he should get some of the blame too. He's purposely putting himself into a vulnerable position by running interference like that. Fortunately, Luongo and Schneider are smart enough not to do that.

I just don't get it. Lupul got two games for a blindside hit to the head. Is Shanahan saying this is somehow equivalent to that? Pair this with the lack of a hearing or suspension for Nash and you have the same antics as the old regime, favour your buddies (you know, Shanny's buddies on Broadway). Clearly only two things matter for supplemental discipline: 1. was there contact to the head? and 2. was there an injury? with the latter pulling more weight than the former, as that is the only reason these three decisions could be made. Watch Smith pull a Hossa and miraculously be perfectly fine, especially with how quickly he popped up and wanted to tear Edler's head off.

Ok soooo if someone did that to schneider and got 2 games.....all of you guys would be crying that it wasnt 25 games.

He dropped the shoulder into him and deserved 2 games.

No

We would be furious because the league wouldn't review it.

Also, I'd like to see a rule change to the effect of "goaltenders must make a reasonable effort to avoid contact when they are out of their crease."

Let's see from Shanahan's POV (who btw has a history with the Canucks...):

- Is he a Canuck? = automatic +1 game (minimum)

- Does he have a history? No
- Was it unintentional? No
- Is it Boston/NYR/Chicago? No, no and no. = add another +1 game

Total = 2 games.

Simple.

Great, bold statement there Gillis. Way to stand up for your players and take a stand.

Wow....this was an unintentional hit - careless yes - but it wasn't a Lucic type hit.  Edler hasn't been suspeneded before - no different than Hansen on Hossa.  Should have been 1 game.  Then again, how can us fans expect any consistency in the NHL?  Lupul 2, Nash 0, Edler 2.  I see a pattern...I guess if Sedin had done it, it would be 0...

I see a pattern too:

Joffrey Lupul = 2 L's = 2 games
Rick Nash = 0 L's = 0 games
Alexander Edler = 2 L's = 2 games

Now, which Sedin are we talking about?
Henrik gets 0 games, but if it was Danny - it's going to be 1 game.

Time to be honest and admit that the league deserves zero respect, and that Shannahan has suffered too many hits to the head.

The only way to send Smith the message is to take him out big time enxt opportunity .. if the NHL wants more goals scored, then treat a goalie like any other player if he goes outside his crease .. voila .. instant offense ..

Why are any of us surprised that the NHL in inconsistent? .. they are as bush league as when Gretzky was the "star" attraction ..

So the NHL says and I think it was Pierre McGuire that also said this but according to them on the Hansen suspension: "the injury doen't play a rule in the suspension". How so? Clearly in both the Hansen and Edler videos, they state that there was an INJURY as a key point, so ???? yes, injury does play a role, and it shouldn't....

good job nhl stay consistent like always if your going to suspend players make it so its even because their have been other goalies besides miller hit and walk away with nothing can't believe this i expected a game because the moron gm's wanted the goalies protected better well now they have it and its overkill

maybe goalies shouldn't be holding onto the puck for longer than they should move the puck and stop wasting time and you won't be hit simple as that

I think a fine would have been a better option. Shanny doesn't seem to remember that there is an option to fine people. I think he likes the power to suspend people. Power a bit gone to his head. It's times like these that I wish I lived in Europe so I could just watch leagues over there with consistency. When was the last time a fine was sent out? Other than a coach or gm one. I think all fans should have stayed with the boycott ideal that was so strong during the lockout. We boycott so we can see some consistency. (I'm dreaming I know.)

Maybe he deserved it...but the fact that Nash didn't even have a hearing is what makes this suspension so ridiculous.

Consistency.

It was a hit to the head, deserved a suspension

No it wasn't. Even Shanahan never claimed that. It was a clean body hit only considered illegal, even according to the suspension video, because they didn't think Edler made an effort to avoid any contact with a goalie. Not head hit and not a hit that would have been illegal against any other player.

He makes himself totally vulnerable doing this. He's done it a few times that has resulted in him being run over. He KNOWS players are on the fore check after the puck that his behind his net. If the league is going to protect him when he does that then he's unstoppable. He can continue to do so and either force players to run him over or stop on a dime as you mentioned. Either way they're probably going to get slapped with a major, a suspension, or both.

Exactly. Why not just pass the puck to the goalie? He can then meander, un-hindered, to the opposing team's crease, puck in glove, and drop it over the goal line. Why even habe forwatds or defensemen?
Shananigan needs to be let go.

Snake Doctor, on 23 May 2014 - 10:41 AM, said:snapback.png

Miller is not on our list. It's Lack as our #1. There is no reason we would have traded both Schnieder and Luongo if we never intended to give Lack the #1 starting job.  Furthermore, the salary and term Miller is looking for is not in our favor.

I have a picture of when he hits him and it's a hit to the head.
Look at the suspension video and stop it right when he does the hit, you will see it's to the head
