Just how badly does Philly wanna' lose this contract? As others have stated, he hasn't played so poorly this season, in fact. So...

Flyers get: Luongo, Edler, & Sauve.(they need D)

Canucks get: Bryzgalov, Simmonds, Couturier. (We need fwds)

Give Ballard a chance to step up & fill a worthy role. Our impressive fwd-depth would be worth the risk.

-After this season, Bryz has 7yr/34m left, but 8 mill is next year, then it starts dropping. If he played decent, it may be moveable next summer, 2014.

-Worst case we have a poor playoffs,so also move Schneider in June/July, along with a big contract like Kesler's. With the haul in returning youth, our future would be set.

-Year & a half later we'd have the flaky Russian, but Cannata & Lack, as well. The Cap would be rising & we'd have youth , size & depth going forward.

Flame away-but this is what I'd consider, as an armchair-GM. Peace

Because Simmonds/Couturier might put us over the top. They are big, tough, durable & talented-I believe they're worth more to our roster than Edler is, for this spring especially.

Wow, Luongo and Edler alone should get us Simmonds and Couturier (if not more), so why would we trade Sauve for Bryz? That's not a good deal for us in any way shape or form.

Now if we were to move Luongo, Ballard and Booth for Bryz, Couturier, 1st and 2nd I might be interested, and we could see about buying out Bryz for them.

WOW, indeed! If we could truly make the swap you say is possible-by all means, DO IT! Booth will be an amnesty buyout-if we're lucky(think they're underestimating/reporting extent of his injury).

If we could swap them 4, I'd gladly welcome Leighton or Boucher to open the gate for 3 mos.

This would be great too-but it's a deal a Mr Aquilini makes, not Gillis.

I didn't say it was possible, I just said that would be what I'd counter with if Philly offered us the deal you proposed. Maybe they turn it down, but we definitely turn down the original deal (which would also be a deal that Aquilini would need to approve since we are never going to keep Bryz).

This IS the best option. Gotta take back a lame contract to get a max-return on Luongo. Imagine...

Twins & Simmonds
Kes, Couturier, Burrows
Schray, Raymond, Hansen
Lappy, Higgins & Kass

Depth-Weise, Pinniz, Sestito

You might eve get Philly's 2014 1st, if we took their headache, Bryz, off their hands.

I keep coming back to this notion. IF we could nab a couple of them fine, Philly fwds; at the same time send them Ballard & Booth in a package, it's a great investment for the team's future.

Gotta feeling MG will package Lu with 1 or 2 more of our bad contracts, but he'll HAVE to take a major albatross back. It would show the fanbase that ownership is willing to invest big coin, to maintain a younger, bigger & competitive team.

wow, reading this post is a nice coincidence
i was just thinking about a strategy to collect a couple of horrible contracts from other teams
with a view to buying out these contracts
as long as we acquired young players as part of the exchange
so we could quickly restock the meager young talent pool the team has
it would involve a major commitment from the owner
but it might make more financial sense to go this route

since the canucks are one of the rich teams
they can amoratize the costs of the buyouts over the next number of years
since that is what the buyout formula involves, a payout over a longer time frame then the original contract

we should then view these buyout costs merely as a straight offset to the salary cap reduction/savings
achieved in the recent lockout
the canucks would then have a neutral financial picture wheh comparing
their pre and post lock out finances
they will also thereby effectively bypass the new salary cap limit
in trading off the salary cap reduction and being permitted to pay these long term buyouts
the real value is the acquisition of young talent
the new salary cap is restrictive
the canucks have been creative in the past in making best use of salary cap criteria
let's see what they can come up with in the context of the new agreement

this would be a clear signal to the fans
that management will consider all legitimate options
and likely keep the commitment and attendance levels at their current levels
the team has had good momentum as a franchise
its value to the community and its value in the league was increasing
that trend could be maintained with a bold move
the longer term financial benefits of this also need to be factored in
