[Confirmed] Canucks new farm team - Utica Comets

Having the team in Peoria, is actually a MUCH better travel schedule - it puts them virtually in the middle of the mid-west (~6 teams within a 3 hour bus ride). I'll take that as a positive, and I'm disappointed for you people in Abbotsford, your mayor clearly wasn't patient enough.

Wolfkeeper just sounds like a bitter fan that's trying to blame the Canucks. You should ask him where their golden boy Darren Haydar went when the games really mattered.

Or how the coach set a franchise record for starting a goalie to the point where he was burnt out in the second half.

For a guy that seems to watch the Wolves alot, he doesn't seem to realize that 70% of the roster were Wolves signings in the majority of games. If they wanna blame anyone, blame Wolves management for its failures.

Chicago has missed the playoffs 3 of the last 5 years, two of them being when the Canucks weren't even their affiliate. So if he wants to point fingers, point them at the organization.

When the Canucks were with the Moose they made the playoffs 5 years in a row before switching to the Wolves. Including two division titles and a trip to the Calder Cup finals. With Canucks prospects playing key roles in every one of those years. And if they think St.Louis is going to be better, they're in for a surprise. Peoria has missed the playoffs 5 of the last 7 years, and have finished lower than the Canucks affiliate all 7 of those years.

Feel free to share any of these points with Wolfkeeper if you want. :bigblush:

i really dont get what the mayor is saying. the canucks didnt ask for a supply fee agreement but yet the deal wouldnt have been better for the city? how is that possible without the flames asking for a huge severance package that apparently wasnt asked for either?

"Banman declined to delve into specifics of negotiations with the Canucks, but said they did not request a supply fee agreement similar to the one that the Heat have with the city."

Perhaps the Canucks stay in Peoria one more year until a deal in Abbotsford can be worked out?

Civic Center begins talks with NHL Vancouver over Rivermen

The Vancouver Canucks came to Peoria on Tuesday.

Now the Peoria Civic Center will try to keep them here.

The NHL team, which bought the AHL's Peoria Rivermen from the St. Louis Blues, arrived for a tour of the facility and a meeting with top officials that could begin the groundwork toward a deal..

Vancouver chief operating officer Victor de Bonis and Canucks assistant general manager and vice-president of hockey operations Laurence Gilman flew in to Peoria and met with Civic Center general manager Jim Wetherington, Civic Center Authority chairman Dan Silverthorn, Peoria mayor Jim Ardis and Rivermen chief operating officer Jason Penning.

"We had a very good discussion," Wetherington said. "We got a good feel of what each side wants and needs and we plan to keep talking. They loved the facililty and the community as we toured around, and I think they are giving us serious consideration.

"They remain among our possibilities for a team next season, and we're exploring all options available to us."

Sources say the Canucks believe they might incur an operating loss of $1 million if they put their AHL farm team in Peoria for 2013-14. The Rivermen are believed to have operated at a loss of $400,000 in the 2012-13 season.

Most AHL teams operate at a loss. NHL teams look at their farm operations as player development investments. It comes down to financial risk tolerance versus prospect development results and the impact it has on the NHL team's future roster.

Vancouver bought the Rivermen with the desire to move them to Abbotsford, B.C. But the Calgary Flames already operate a team there, and have re-iterated this week they intend to remain. The city there subsidizes Calgary's operating deficit as part of its lease agreement.

Published reports in Canada on Tuesday said talks between the Canucks and City of Abbotsford over an AHL lease had ended, and no deal was made. So Vancouver is seeking a home for its AHL team, and would likely want a very short lease in Peoria while it attempts to wait-out Calgary for a later move to Abbotsford.

Vancouver is believed to be looking at Utica, N.Y., and the Seattle-Tacoma area as well as Peoria. A highly-placed source with a minor-league assessed Peoria as a "clear-cut best option" among those candidates. Travel costs would be a major expense for Vancouver to operate its farm team out west.

The Canucks execs toured Carver Arena and the hockey facilities, but also looked over every inch of the building Tuesday and were impressed with the entire complex, according to Wetherington.

After the tour, they sat down for a 40-minute meeting. Vancouver needs to make a decision on where -- or if -- it will operate its AHL team for 2013-14 by May 13. That's the deadline by which the AHL requires all teams to commit.

"They are short on time," Ardis said. "There is some urgency for both sides. We really want to have the highest-level of professional hockey possible in Peoria. In the end, the decision will be made by the Civic Center board."

Gillis was on the Team1040 today, plenty he talked about, but here's his update on the AHL team:

AHL team: until Abby/Flames agreement changes, we won't go there, not sure if Peoria will be next year's locaton, going through a number of proposals for location, it's an advantage owning own team since a separate ownership has more control over roster and we're limited in how they control it, we've been trying to buy an AHL team for 5 years since he arrived to get that control, Peoria still an option and we have a month to go through remaining options, 6 or 7 that make sense, some being cities in Northwest rather than just out East
