[Discussion] Roberto Luongo Trade Thread 7.0

The technicality of goaltending !!!!!!!

Anyways, I thought the Canucks played alright against Calgary. Good enough to win. The hitting is increasing game by game. I do like the fact that the goals came later during the game. While Luongo and Schneider are holding fort, the Canucks are resisting beyond the opposition's point of break. Then the opposition breaks down and the Canucks score and often.

This will pay off dividend in the playoffs as many games are defensive one goal games that often run into overtime. If the Canucks show they can resist and sustain, all will be well.

I like what I see.

Waiting for the full link to the interview, but when Gillis was on Team 1040 this morning, he talked about the rumoured Toronto trade and noted if picks were coming back like rumoured he had a 3rd party ready to make another deal. I missed that part of the interview but they reiterated it after the interview when they recapped a bit of it. I'll keep my eye out for the link.

I was at the game and it was pretty bad. No Canucks were really finishing their checks. I always thought the last 10 games were prep for playoffs but the effort in Calgary simply wasn't there. 40 + shots. Hard to take any positives out of that other than Lu's performance. Taking Garrison off the #1 PP didn't look very good either. Getting Kesler back up to speed might be the reason. Kesler does not pass the puck much and Ballard was all over the place.

The aforementioned Gillis interview on Team1040:

http://www.teamradio.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/mike-gillis-april-12.mp3

Summary (including other things not just Luongo talk):

  • Situation with Butler as backup: started that morning and they have a list of goalies in each city in the event of an emergency, give them jersey and under gear plus $500 contract, players actually wanted him to play at the end but wasn't really appropriate to put him in, would have been available to play if needed though

  • On Luongo and his nervousness/butterflies: Lu's been a pro through the entire episode, competitor and great relationship with team and players, wants to perform well when he can

  • Trade deadline a difficult day for everybody, heat of the moment for Luongo, no different for him, they were close to something happening but like a lot of trades it didn't

  • Canucks were involved in a discussion with another team that would have played a major role in completing the trade if it happened, moving what Toronto had offered

  • Was there another team other than Toronto it could have happened with? Yes.

  • No chance for a compliance buyout "at this time"

  • Higgins injury is a mild MCL sprain, not that serious but can be nagging so they'll see how it is in a few days

  • Booth not likely to be sooner than 2nd round based on the injury he had, outside possibility for 2nd round though

  • Jensen will stay with Chicago is they make the playoffs, could be an option in the playoffs as he can play in the NHL

  • Schroeder much the same, consistency is the issue and they haven't considered him on the wing but they could if they had to

  • Tanev injured ankle in a hit against Calgary, has had an MRI and is in a walking boot, uncertain how long he be out for, not that serious but serious enough to keep him out to let it heal, out 7 days to 2 weeks

  • Kassian has good vision and hockey sense but with young plaers want to see that every night, every shift, he and Kesler are competitive guys and can be a good line, people are recognizing Kassian is a highly skilled player too

  • Schneider will play his share of games down the stretch, was aware Luongo might not get traded going into the season and Cory has proven he's capable of handling it, both goalies will be well prepared to start in the playoffs but clearly Cory has played well enough to earn the spot

  • Speculation around Peoria moving to Abby, no developments at this point, there's a chance they could stay in Peoria but also looking at other locations as there's high demand for AHL teams

Not interesting to me at all. I'd think if they really thought they couldn't even get a pick back for him at the draft, then they'd put him on waivers and someone would take him for free. I understand the cap concerns but a team like Florida would certainly take him for nothing just for the extra revenue in ticket and jersey sales he'd generate, and the possibility of him helping get them to the playoffs again (more added revenue even if they get swept) and making the transition easier for Markstrom the next couple years.

If someone were to get him for free off waivers, then they'd have the option of trading him later as well for an asset when more of his contract is paid off and he still has value on the ice as well as to keep a cap floor team at the lower limit.

Absolutely agree about Markstrom and Lack. Perhaps they become another promising goalie just like many teams have had but don't pan out. Teams have spent the better part of a decade (or longer, think the Leafs) going that route to try and find an actual starter when they could have just traded for one when the opportunity presented itself.

Markstrom and Lack have great potential, no doubt, but until that translates to the NHL we'll never know if they realize it. Markstrom has had two knee surgeries, and Lack having injuries this year, could be something that holds them back or perhaps they overcome it. Until then, any good goaltending they can get is a gift horse they shouldn't look in the mouth.

Not sure if posted, but Gillis was also on CKNW yesterday evening around 7 pm.

- Gillis said, in his mind, he didn't get close to making a trade w/ Toronto on trade deadline day re: Lu.

- Did u get a legitimate offer from the Leafs? Gillis: We've had multiple offers from different teams. None of them have met the criteria that, we think, helps us. It can help us in many different ways. Once we got Roy, it took the pressure off to make a trade to fill that hole in lineup.
