goalie13
there is no rule against this. You are saying Bettman would disallow it for spite? They allow the Islanders to 'buy' Tim Thomas' stupid cap hit ?

Vicky
And whats stopping us from buying out luongo, then having him sign a 1mil deal per for 4 years with another team and that team just trading him to us for a 7th rounder? Where is the rule against this?

J.I.A.H.N
What if...... Say, Phili traded Joe Blow ( Ahl 4th liner) and future considerations to Vancouver for Peter Puck (ECHL 4th liner) and future considerations. Phili's future consideration is a 1st round pick and a prospect and Vancouver's future considerations are the rights to negotiate with Luongo before Vancouver buys Luongo out? Curcumvention yes! But no different than a team allowing another team to negotiate with a player, prior to a trade (aka Kiprusoff to Toronto), now imagine that deal was in place to avoid wavers????And to get below the cap! goalie13
You mean like selling the #1 overall pick to the Thrashers for some nominal sum...... ...............only if they 'collude' to agree that in a future act, being the draft day,...........the thrashers DONT pick a Sedin ? You mean that kind of 'collusion' ? Promise something for something in return in a future act? Ever heard of something called 'future considerations' ? Let me make it real easy for you. Step 1. Find out where Luongo wants to go. Step 2, Find out what they would be willing ot pay for a Luongo signed for 4 years at 1mil per Step 3 Buy out Luongo. Step 4 Luongo signs with that team Step 5 , the teams gm then trades us whatever that value was for Luongo for a 7th round pick in return. There is nothing bettman can do about it.
