Roy is so similar to Kyle Wellwood..both physical size and their playing style.
Both are very skillful but so tiny. If I am Kyle Wellwood, I must be wondering why the heck is that guy earning so much more money than me!

U seriously think Wellwood does not workout? Wellwood can also scores....and espeically on breakaway or shoot outs.

Roy is a solid player. If Kesler comes back, he's a GREAT 3rd line centre.

However, I did find these pictures on the internet. Enjoy.

Haha Come on, Wellwood ?

Roy was shortlisted for the 2010 Men's Olympic team, Wellwood isn't in that league.

Roy is much faster and stronger than Wellwood, and plays a much better defensive game. He's also a better shooter. Other than their size, they really aren't that similar.

Yeah a little, they're both really good smaller playmakers but Roy has speed and power and Welly's a doughboy

Not knowing much about Roy who before going to Dallas was an Eastern player. I don't follow the East let alone Buffalo save for Boston & Pittsburgh. I've always heard the name Derek Roy but attributed his point production to Eastern style of play i.e Less travel, grind & physicality thus easier to score.

He gets traded to Dallas and suffers a scoring drought. Most of his points coming in way from assists.
He becomes expendable due to UFA and so-so average play in Dallas.

The Canucks trade for him at the deadline. Initially I'm content because I was under the impression he was not the only player we were to acquire. Then I do a little more research and find out he's only 5'9 tall. Talk about small...

This guy better put up points in the PLAYOFFS. I don't care if he puts up sick regular seasons numbers. We got this guy for the PLAYOFFS. I have a 6th sense that Roy is going to get manhandled easily come playoffs.

Roy alone is such a WTF move. What we needed is Clowe & (2 goals in 1st game with Rangers), Torres, Chimera, Jagr, Pominville. Not just Mr. Derek 5'9 Roy. Hey while we're why don't we go for Steve Sullivan & Matthew Lombardi eh...

I hope Gillis knows what he's doing. I want him to prove me wrong. I see this Roy rental trade as completely suspect.

you do relize that Gillis almost got Clowe, and how is clowe gonna be any different than Roy?

It's really hard to understand what CDC boards want... To the OP, have you noticed we have been playing without a legitimate second/third line center for two years?
At the trade line, teams give up players (under contract) for different reasons... Not to mention most trades ate NTC players and they ultimately have the last say... Take Iginla for example, Bruins traded for him and he ends up in Pittsburgh...

Lu's contact is a pain and not many teams are willing to take it unless they acquire Lu for peanuts and that's the reason he didn't get traded. Canucks did trade for Clowe and Torres but didn't work out and were still here with the weight of Lu' s contact.

Going into the playoffs Canucks have some legitimate players down the middle, so enjoy it while it lasts because we don't know what next season has in the bag.

Op, you speak of Clowe like he had an amazing season with the sharks and we didn't snag him.... yes he got two goals with the rangers but he had none with the sharks... Remember it's much much easier to score in the east vs the west.

I think the first piece needed was to get a center and that was main priority meanwhile there was other projects which simply did not work in our favor. Stuff happens enjoy this season, remember there is always another...

I really like that you say that you don't care about his regular seasin scoring and two sentences later you mention Clowe scoring two goals in a regular season game for the Rangers. Makes no sense at all.

And I am positive about this trade as I think Roy is a great playmaker for our secondary scoring as we dearly need.

Wow, the stupidity ... and we have to put up with garbage comments about garbage players all the time from this one. If you don't know anything about hockey why pretend you do and tell everyone off.

Wellwood and Roy are both short so they are the same player I guess. Maybe this should clue you in that there are more stats to hockey besides height, weight, and fights won. But no you'll never get that. Roy plays tenaciously, he is not afriad of traffic, he's feisty, he plays in tough areas, he's fast, and he's slippery. He's a heck of a player. While I like Wellwood too anyone with any type of hockey brain can see there are vast differences there.

But yeah, you're right, both have zero fights and zero fights wins this year. They are both obviously horrible. Damn, if only we would have gotten Bissonette or McGrattin instead.

"What players need is the right kind of strength and power. That includes learning to understand that leverage and positioning can be just as important as raw strength when it comes to winning battles in the game. It's more about timing and athleticism --and avoiding injury--than it is about how much you can bench press. I don't know how many times I've seen a guy with the physique of a defensive end line up a guy half his size, only to bounce off when he connects. Sure, there is room in the game for big guys who can throw their weight around. But for the most part, players are smart enough to see them coming--and strong enough to protect the puck when they arrive. There are trainers out there who know how to devlop hockey-specific strength--though a trainer can help only if a player follows the program. All too often, I've seen players sign up with the best trainer, but not show up for their workouts and never to reap the benefits."
