BC's Staggering job losses

I don't need statistics to know the job situation here is terrible...I had better opportunities coming out of high school than I've had since I graduated university. Doesn't help that you can no longer go into a place and give them a resume, you have to go through the online system, which is very different from how it was even ten years ago. That electrician lady in the commercial might not have to go anywhere else to find a job, but if I don't find one within the month I will definitely have to. I hear the weather in Alberta is good, and there's some people I can go to working for.

Whats happening in Coal Harbour right now is prices are slowly going down. The same as everywhere else in Van. A flat market has about the same effect as a slight drop in prices. Those investors who own already and rent out the properties arent going to sell necessarily but the speculators will stop buying. A leveling off on prices while inflation catches up for a few years would be welcome. Especially if interest rates stay low.

EDIT: of course, having a job will help those attempting to purchase a home....

Don't be condesceding and rude. I have a job and a home. And enough BS....read the article to see that they're not being rented...they're sitting empty. You're spewing a bunch of stuff but it doesn't change the facts.

People who buy here should be required to make this "home"...do you think it makes neighbourhoods safe to sit with a bunch of vacant property? It's best if neighbourhoods are filled with people who actually live the homes.

The ones I feel sorry for are the ones who purchased over the last 10 years. With the incoming de valuation of their property the looming bubble burst is going to wipe out the majority of savings for a lot of BC working families. Those under 40 if they stay in the workforce longer can regain those losses if housing prices go up again over the long term - or if they work till 68-70. Those 50 ish and over will be hurt the most. If they where depending on pullling out that equity to live on its going to force them to stay in homes they really can't afford to stay in.

And wow are lots of people leaving BC. In my kids university class almost 1/2 are planning on moving to Alberta/Saskatchewan after graduating and from the wifes side of the family who is non union construction .... next family get together will be easier to have in Alberta than BC. You would think that it would be followed by comments that people are leaving because of a political party either in power or coming to power but you would be wrong. For the ones I have spoke with it doesn't matter if the BC Liberals or NDP win the election they are all going. BC's wages have fallen behind and are stagnant - our books are bleeding red and we have the highest cost of living in the country.

And really I can't blame my son - if I where in his shoes starting out after graduation why work in BC for 15-20% less wages with the highest cost of living - it all equals a lower quality of living. BC is creating a ton of low paying no benefit jobs that are not helping the economy one bit. Each of those jobs requires full BC medical subsidizing as well as paying little or no taxes. The rest of us working are subsidizing those company profits and not seeing any return either. Too bad we sold decent jobs to the Sodexho's of the world and gave federal tax breaks to those that used the $$$ to move the country ( cue the blame the unions here ).

I would hope that no matter who gets elected the following occurs day 1 after the election

1 - No more contracting out - if goverment needs savings then find them with those workers. The Millions apon millions we have given to foriegn companies the last 10 years doing contracted services are leaving the province - that money needs to stay in BC and be spent in BC.

2 - BC timber should create jobs in BC - not in other countries

3 - Any businuess tax breaks should be conditional on proof of capital reinvestment or wage increases - additional staff etc - No more corperate socialism for businuess without strings attached. Reward those companies investing in BC and BC workers - not those farming off the extra profits for share holders only.

4 - Match schools both at the highschool level and tech level with Contruction - trades groups and unions. When kids decide to do trades and are prepared to pay their way through - there should be pre matched placement waiting for them with guidance from the stake holders as they journey through their training.

5 - Make immigration work for us - not just for some of us. I would rather have mexican farm workers become citizens and stay and contribute rather then take the wages out of the country. If they are good enough to work for us - they are good enough to join us. We forget that the industrial boom of North America was in large part greatly assisted by immigrant workers. In fact a great deal of our grandparents or great parents would be able to consider themselves at some point - immigrant workers in Canada.

6 - Which ever goverment gets elected needs to start governing on behalf of all people in BC and not just those that get them elected. A proper jobs creation committe to assist goverment should be equally represented by small and big businuess - union and non union - private and public employers.

Ok - rant over.....

Easy fix if politicians had the courage - Give much larger tax credits to owner occupied homes - transfer those taxes to owners of multiple homes - scaling up dramatically for each additional property. Property that is rented at fair market value would recieve an offsetting tax credit to reduce or eliminate the added tax.

That way people who own and live in that community pay less

Those that own and rent at affordable and reason prices get tax breaks for providing needed affordable rentals

Those that are buying and holding to speculate and manipulate the prices are going to be hammered so hard by taxes that they flip those units quickly

Don't get me wrong - buying cheaper houses or condo's at list prices to make a profit is a right and no one should be prevented from doing so - But if by doing so you manipulate the market harming others - then they should pay. The tax would need to be high enough ( make it kick in 12 months after purchase ) that it would not make any economic sense to hold multiple properties - either move in - rent them or just keep one for your retirement/vacation and not 10 units..
