Pavel Bure is the reason I watched hockey as a kid, he is the reason I fell in love with the game, and will always be one of my favorite canucks. I am so happy that this organization is finally doing what is right and honoring Bure. He was truly a treat to watch growing up and if I ever had the chance to meet him I would tell him without a doubt he is the REASON I am a canucks and hockey fan. I love Bure.

Want to know what people think about the comments Declan Hill made regarding Bure in his book, The Fix, Soccer and Organized Crime. Check out page 3 of the book to see the comments he made. The whole book is an incredible read and will change your view of professional sports.

I'm part of minority that doesn't think he quite earned it, but I'll support the decision nonetheless. Happy for him and the organization.

This pic is awesome. Bure definitely could be a bit of a hot dog at times. But he had the mustard to back it up.

Long time overdue in my opinion.

Bure has been the most talented hockey player to don a Canuck uniform without doubt. I was bitter when he left and when stories came out about his connections to the Russian mafia it confirmed my worst fears. It doesn't seem to be an issue anymore so it must not have been true.

Many are suggesting Bure is the #1 Canuck. I will rank him before Naslund who's jersey should not have been retired but I still rank Linden #1 and Smyl #2. All three of these players took their teams to the CUP finals but both Smyl and Linden's longevity plus their commitment to the Canucks makes me rank them over Bure. Smyl's contribution can never be minimized as he played on teams with far less talent than Linden and Bure. His mental toughness was second to none.

POPULAR

Reading about how bad the management treated Bure in the early 90s makes me sick.

He loved the fans and the city and probably would have been a Canucks his whole career if it weren't for his mistreatment.

You don't treat one of the most skilled players to ever play the game that unprofessionally

...and Botchford breathes a sigh of relief.

hahaha, he's taken a few jabs at MacIntyre over that. I guess he was right, though.

On the Bure retirement: I'm all for it. He's head, shoulders, and maybe even a pair of rippling russian pecs above the next best Canuck in terms of hockey talent.

Aqualini = Stud in Botchford's books.

The key difference is that Sopel can fill in for Seabrook and Campbell just fine. Bieksa, he is garbage so in that sense he is like the worst defenseman in the league.

When Cody (Hodgson) gets older, he might be better than Datsyuk.

Let's not push this guy (Kassian). He's still immature, and if he fails on the 2nd line it's because he isn't ready. Some guys really need years to develop, it's how well and how fast players adapt to the game. In my opinion, I'd rather have Horvat getting 2nd line minutes. He will start off on the 3rd line next season but I see him making the transition, being a great compliment to whoever plays his wings.

At this point, I don't see Kassian fitting in to any role other than a 3rd. If players like Kassian start getting 2nd line minutes then we just stay inconsistent as a team.

I think Baggins has yet to see this thread. Or maybe he's in denial.

I get his argument for stats and accomplishments, but I don't think the decision can be made entirely on those two things. Otherwise you might as well take Linden, Naslund, and Smyl down from the rafters cause they don't have record stats or accomplishments compared to other NHL greats.

Ultimately, it's about the lasting connection a player has with the fans. And very few Canucks have had the lasting impression that Bure left. I would argue only Linden has inspired more passion from fans in this city towards a player.

Tremendous news. This and the probability of the Canucks getting their farm team in Abbotsford? Good off-ice year.

Of course Bure's jersey deserves retirement. Only a few bitter folks think otherwise.

As someone who has defended Pavel against the haters on these boards since 2001 I'm glad Aquillini said "I listened to the fans."

Didn't this guy end up not wanting to play for the canucks, and demanded a trade, essentially? Doesn't sound like someone who is a real franchise guy. very good, but I don't know about the jersey retirement if he is demanding a trade out of vancouver at some point.
