Idea to fix the Luongo situation.

Recommended Posts

Find another player in the league with similar contract situation that needs to be bought out.

Examples: Brad Richards, Marian Hossa, Bryzgalov, etc.

These players are still solid NHL players; and they have "hockey" value. NYR and CHI are high income teams, and can afford buyouts. During the off-season; these players are all traded for each other. Who gets who doesn't really matter, as they will be bought out by the other teams.

At that point, all the above players become UFA; at which point they can be re-signed by their original teams. The players will love the idea, as they get full salary for the amnesty buyout, plus a new contract. Also, they aren't stuck getting traded to Columbus like Gaborik did. Then they either become UFA or get traded to a contending team.

This will be an interesting off-season as teams with high income will use their amnesty buyouts as a bargaining chip. Certain players like Danny Briere will be valuable to the Islanders or Coyotes. His cap hit is 6.5 for 2 years, but only gets paid 2.5 each year. He also has "hockey" value.

The question is will Bettman and Burke allow rich teams to re-sign their own buyouts; or other teams buyouts. I would gladly buyout Luongo, if the Devils buyout Kovalchuk.

Long story short, we are essentially trading Luongo for some other high-priced but talented player; but one that we can sign to an appropriate contract. This way, no team "gives" away a solid player; but the whole idea requires a bit of "wink wink" with the player agents, GM's, etc.
