Like the title says, if you could trade draft picks for cash what would they be worth?

Assume it's legal to do so. Or at the very least the trade could be dressed up as the 1st overall pick for a 6th round pick + cash, to make it legal. Anyway just imagine that it would not be an issue.

Put aside that this will never happen and assume it's possible.

Let's say the team holding the #1 overall selection in the draft has chosen to sell it. Assuming the consensus top player available is projected as a future franchise player/all star. What do you think it would it be worth in dollar terms? Considering the future revenue this type of asset could bring in the future.

Also, what would high picks in the subsequent rounds be worth in cash?

2nd round draft pick = 5 million cap space, according to Bruins/Islanders.

and in a deep draft too so that's probably like a late 1st.

I'd say for a 1st overall (maybe for a Hall/Johnson/Tavares type player) I'd say must be worth 20-30 mil for a team like Van/Tor/Mon/Pitts

at least.

To get Drouin on my team I'd pay whatever I could.

Imagine if someone went balls out for Patrik Stefan however

1st round 20-30 mill
2nd round 15-20
3rd round 10-15

now that I've been thinking about it, I'd probably say;

1st overall: 50mil
2nd-3rd overall: 40-30mil
4th-10th overall: 30-20mil
11th-20th: 15mil
21st-30th: 10-5mil
2nd rounder: 1-2mil
3rd rounder: 500k

A team like Phoenix who isn't doing to well money-wise had the 1st overall pick they could start a bid at $30 million and every team in the NHL could go in on it. That could be cool.

that's my guess. Could be worth more. The success rate for 2nd round picks is a large drop off from 1st rounders, I doubt teams would want to buy those from other teams. Especially the owners. However, owners could make a lot of money if they could buy a stamkos or hall in the draft....certain teams would jump all over that
