[Extension] Steve Mason Extended 1 Year With Philly

Recommended Posts

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed goaltender Steve Mason to a one-year contract extension.

The team announced the move via Twitter on Monday morning.

The Flyers acquired Mason last Wednesday just prior to the NHL trade dadline in exchange for goaltender

Michael Leighton and a 2015 third-round draft pick.

Mason has posted an 3-6-1 record in 14 games with the Flyers and Blue Jackets this season with a 2.87 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.

He played one scoreless period in the Flyers' 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday.

In his first three seasons with the Blue Jackets, Mason had been a workhorse, appearing in 50 or more games in each.

Originally selected in the third round (69th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by Columbus, Mason's best pro season by far came as a rookie.

Mason would win the Calder Trophy in 2009 after posting a 33-20-7 record with a 2.26 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage while posting 10 shutouts.

In 232 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Mason has posted a 96-99-27 record with a .903 save percentage and a 2.90 goals-against average.

The 23-year-old is in the final year of a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $2.9 million. He will remain a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current deal.

The Flyers did not resign Mason to replace Bryz. The Flyers signed Mason because they have no back up (Even if Bryz is bought out unless Mason plays fantastic hockey they will still be exploring other goalie options).

It was a low risk signing as Mason wanted to play in Philadelphia and signed a 1.5 million dollar extension which was a paycut.

Steve Mason to this extent is a back up calibre right now. He was a product of the HItchock system that boosted up his stats. Since then he's been downright losing starting jobs to other goalies who were not even starters in the NHL. He's so bad, Colmbus made a trade for another goalie last year. He's still young, I wouldn't mind if it was a small package of him plus a couple assets for Luongo. Honestly I rather have him then Scrivens. Once Scrivens play a a year or 2, he will be figured out too. Steve Mason is another young guy good to have that can push Schneider. Maybe I'm dreaming. Dregger did report Flyers were looking at Luongo.
