Baghdad (CNN) -- A series of bomb blasts across Iraq on Monday killed at least 42 people and wounded more than 257 others, police said.

The attacks took place in at least six provinces: Baghdad, Anbar, Babel, Kirkuk, Salaheddin Diyala, and Nasriya, police officials across the country told CNN.

Two of the bombs exploded at a checkpoint near Baghdad's international airport.

Most of the attacks in Baghdad targeted Shiite areas, police told CNN. Al Qaeda in Iraq, made up of Sunni extremists, has claimed responsibility for many attacks in recent months.

Attacks elsewhere hit security checkpoints, Shiite areas and political offices.

With provincial elections scheduled to take place in five days, ongoing attacks have politicians worried that violence could skew the outcome, if Iraqis who fear attacks on polling centers stay at home.

42 people dead and 257 wounded.

What is going on with this world.

I completely Care about this, however since the initial invasion of Iraq there has been in excess of 122,000 civilian deaths by violence and more than that number due to unfit living conditions. 42 is a number to be added to the genocidial war crimes that the previous American Administration under Bush and Cheney should be on trial for at the war crimes tribunal.

If there's a fatal car crash that occurs outside of your house, and a similar fatal car crash that occurs in Brisbane, Australia, which are you going to care more to follow up on?

You're saying 'no one seems to care' on a Canadian forum, where the majority here live in North America; the story therefore becomes more relevant.

I'm going to guess it was Islamic extremists.

*waits to get flamed*

Really though Iraq was a war that should never have happened. Not that the Iraqi regime didnt deserve to get invaded. But the Iraqi people didnt. Anyone know of any polls where Iraqis think they were better off before or after? I would be shocked if there were iraqis thinking its better now. Then again I don't really understand how bad Saddam really was.
