Why doesn't Dwight Howard just throw the ball hard
off the backboard on all his second free throws, to
at least have a chance of getting the ball back, because everyone knows
he'll miss the free throw anyway.

Answer that one.

is it because it would make the game seem childish and not professional?

1. It wouldn't seem professional.
2. There is no guarantee that himself or his teammates would get the ball back.
3. NBA would probably try to make a rule based on something like that.
4. If he misses the first one, wouldn't you want to try to salvage that trip with at least 1 point?
5. If the missed free throw doesn't hit the rim, its a violation and the possession changes, if I recall correctly.

You need to hit the rim on free throws or it is a violation and the ball goes to the other team (for the last free throw).

so why is it when a player throws an air ball on the 1st shot for example that isn't the case?

You are guaranteed a free throw no matter what. If its a 3 point attempt, you are guaranteed the first 2 free throws.

so Dwight should throw the ball as hard
as he can to hit the rim and have
a chance it bounces to one of his team mates.
