Ehrhoff and Malholtra: The true nucleus to our recent success?

I know this has been beaten to death, so if you don't want to read you can go, but I felt this had to be addressed to the community, and hear their thoughts.

Malholtra was a player that brought a lot to the table. His defensive play solidified the 3rd line problem we had in the years before we acquired him and he brought us to our first President's Trophy. He was still playing last year and even though we got ousted in the first round, we won another President's Trophy in the regular season. It really shows how much he brought to the team, the immediate locker room presence that he brought changed the team as a whole. Shutting him down would clearly shore the old problems on the 3rd line, but with the acquisition of Derek Roy, it should help remedy this hole.

Ehrhoff brought a strong puck-handling defenseman who just worked well with the Sedin's on the powerplay. He boosted the strength of our powerplay and gave us that strong first pass from the blueline. He brought a bit of grit and strong hits, along with his skillset. Letting him go for almost nothing really set us back. We expected Keith Ballard to perform to expectations, but it hasn't panned out and it looks like Ballard's time here is over.

Ehrhoff still plays top-4 minutes, even with his plummeting numbers in goals and assists. I just wish that we got the full value of Ehrhoff when he was around instead of letting him walk for nothing.

yes, they were a big reason for our success--- or rather what they brung.

Malhotra--isn't it nice having a Selke calibre center (5th in Selke voting before he got injured in 2011) on your third line shutting down the opposition's top line? That leaves the Sedins and Kesler to deal with their 2nd and 3rd line. Also, his faceoffs skills are incredible, and a big reason of our defensive success.

Ehrhoff-- knows what to do with the puck, unlike Edler who, often times, needs guidance (granted Edler still has time to mature). He can carry the puck from their blueline, to the corner and make a sick pass.

i.e:

we need more of that from our current blueline.

I think Roy is an upgrade on Manny, though in a different way, he brings different elements.

And I think we needed another Dman, not neccisarily Ehrhoff, but last year we were lacking it. We picked it up this year in Garrison who I would take 10/10 times over Ehrhoff. So I'm not unhappy about it now, Garrison is better and as someone else said I think we missed Salo alot more anyways (Which was filled by Garry & Tanev stepping up)

"or rather what they brung"..................you mean brought.

I still think Salo is the missing piece. He was so calm and reliable.

I could be wrong but I'm sure our form dipped when he was injured.

The Key here is a smooth skating puck moving defense man, that we haven't had since Ehrhoff. You can have all the complete defense man you want, but none of the current Canucks/nor any ready NHL ready prospects have the ability to properly use speed to move the puck into the offensive zone/nor have crisp passes that allow the , lack of speed, Sedins to attack on the go.

Now with Garrison, Hamhuis, Tanev being defensively responsible. It's key to bring in a guy, who can get the whole team to transition faster into the offensive zone.

Bringing a real puck moving defense man/PPQB may allow the team to stop trying to make Edler be one, so that Edler can be that two-way well rounded defense man he was suppose to be. I've been saying this for ages, Edler has been struggling the past two years because everyone is expecting him to be Ehrhoff.

Salo isn't the missing piece, he was here last year. Add a real puck mover to the team, and watch the Twins add 10-20+ points per season. With Ehrhoff, the Twins were Art Ross guys, without Ehrhoff, the Twins are back to PPG guys, it's no coincidence. Get a puck moving defense man.

A 3rd line defensive, face off specialist is important but It's difficult to say that Manny Malholtra mattered at all. Say all you want about him, Leadership, and all, but the Canucks went to the finals without him. Talk about those matchups all you want, but with the way AV coached, teams didn't really have a problem having their top guys on the ice against Malholtra. It still kept our top guys from playing. Malholtra has never had a good playoffs, ever and these guys aren't hard to find.

A good Puck moving defense man on the other hand....good luck.

Kesler scored most of his goals, on the PP i believe. The PP was on fire, because you had a puck mover that can run the play. The PP has been average ever since.

Edit: Kesler had 15 PPG, Daniel had 18. Both have dropped 50% since. Daniel has 3 this year( on pace for 5-6), and Kesler has 2(page for 8). Terrible PP. Mason Raymond has more PPG than either of them, and he's at 4.

You want to know why the whole team's production has dropped? Now you know...

I still remember Erhoff getting clotheslined by the rat Marchand and loosing the puck in our own end, then going directly to the bench to pout. Still remember Boston forwards pushing him around more than any of our other d-men because they could.
