Where are we in the draft?

I think they are currently 25th. But if Pittsburgh, Chicago or Anaheim lose before the 3rd round the Canucks pick gets 1 spot better for each of those teams that gets knocked out.

Technically they are currently at 25, but either St Louis or L.A will be eliminated in round 1, so that moves them to 24. Canucks are seeded higher because of being divisional winners, but that's ignored when re seeding for draft picks.

Depends on division winners who don't make the conference finals. Canucks could finish anywhere from 22-25 based on Montreal already being eliminated and them being a division winner with more points than the Canucks.

From Wikipedia.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_Entry_Draft - Selection Order and Draft Lottery.....

"At the conclusion of the regular season, the 14 NHL teams not qualifying for the playoffs are entered in a weighted lottery to determine the initial draft picks in the first round, seeded according to regular season standing. The 30th-place team has the best chance of winning the lottery while the 29th-place team has a 18.8% chance of winning, with odds diminishing to a 0.5% chance for the 17th-place team. A single selection from the lottery pool is made, with the winning team improving its draft position to the number 1 spot, and no team dropping more than one place.

The remaining order is determined by the Stanley Cup playoff results.[8] Whichever team wins the Stanley Cup is awarded the 30th and last pick, while the runner-up is given the 29th pick. The teams eliminated in the conference finals are awarded the 28th and 27th picks, with the 28th pick going to the team with the better regular season record. Remaining division winners are then sorted by points, then the rest of the field are ranked next, filling in the 26th through 15th picks. In both cases, better records result in later picks.[6] "

OK thanks. Didn't realize that as division winners they can pick no better than 21.

Just to clarify, teams eliminated in round 1 and round 2 are grouped together and pick from 15-26. 7 teams had a better record than the Canucks. Chicago, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, Montreal, Boston, St Louis, Los Angeles.

St Louis and LA are playing, so guaranteed to pick 25th or better.

Here's a break down of number of teams ahead being eliminated in 1st or 2nd round, and where they will pick.

1-25

2-24

3-23

4-22

5-21

6-20

7-19

So currently Canucks will pick between 19-24.

We need to have a really strong draft here. The number 21 or 22 pick would allow us to grab a really good player.

This is a good position to snag the players that have their stock fall on draft day. Players like Jordan Eberle.

I personally like the looks of Mirco Mueller from Switzterland. He's got good size 6'3", and awesome skating ability from the sounds of it. Could be the next Mark Streit, which is exactly what this team is lacking going forward.

There are 7 teams with a better record than vancouver, chi Pitt Ana mon bos stl la so that would make us pick 23 and for every team with a worse record that makes it to the conference finals we move up a spot. Best that can happen is sjs and Detroit other side we need Pitt and Boston to go out in the next round

Yeah, I was just going by as of right now. I also discovered that despite STL and LA having a better record, should they be eliminated in round one or two (which at least one of them will), they still get a better pick than Vancouver because Vancouver were a divisional winner. As per GPCanuck

Right now we are drafting 19th overall. Only if Boston were to lose in game 7, we would move to 18th. The NYR/Wash series has no bearing on us as both of those teams finished below us in the regular season.

The 8 teams reaching the second round take the last 8 spots (23-30). The 14 teams failing to reach the playoffs take the first 14 spots (1-14) and order is decided through the lottery. The remaining middle 8 spots are given to the teams that are knocked out in the first round and their order is decided by their final league standing.
